Briefs: Highlands principal leaving

Julie Colgrove, who has been principal of Hanover Highlands Elementary School in Hanover Park for a decade, will leave the post next summer. Colgrove will move to Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 headquarters in Schaumburg to run the bilingual and multicultural department. Before joining Highlands Elementary in 1998, Colgrove was assistant principal at Armstrong Elementary School in Hoffman Estates and Aldrin Elementary School in Schaumburg. This also marks a return for Colgrove to the bilingual department, where she previously served as acting program coordinator, bilingual assessment liaison and bilingual teacher. Colgrove replaces Bilingual Director Barbara Wojtysiak, who is retiring after 14 years in District 54 and 38 years in education. In other staffing news, Michelle LeDeaux, a teacher at Mead Junior High in Elk Grove Village since 2001, has been tapped to take over as assistant principal, effective immediately. She replaces Chyrel Moore, who officials said decided to return to a teaching position as a gifted education resource teacher.

Kitchen fire in Palatine

There were no injuries in a Palatine fire Friday afternoon that started in a residential kitchen. Firefighters responded to 1198 E. Barberry Lane about 12:30 p.m. after fire and smoke were showing from the front door of the four-unit home. A total of 22 firefighters responded and preliminary investigations show the cause to be a grease fire. Damage has been estimated at $22,000. Palatine firefighters remind people never put water on a grease fire. Instead, use a lid to smother the fire if you're able.
