Fomer Indy driver sentenced

XENIA, Ohio -- Former Indianapolis 500 driver David D. "Salt" Walther was sentenced to three years in prison for leading police on a chase at speeds of up 100 mph.

Greene County Common Pleas Court Judge Stephen Wolaver sentenced the 59-year-old Walther on Wednesday after a jury convicted him of failing to comply with an order or signal of a police officer after a two-day trial.

Assistant Greene County Prosecutor David Hayes said Walther led police departments in the Dayton suburbs of Beavercreek and Centerville on a chase in July. A message seeking comment was left for defense attorney Charles Bursey.

Walther, who raced in the Indianapolis 500 seven times, was injured in a fiery 1973 crash at the 500.

In August, Walther was sentenced to two years and two months in prison for nonsupport of dependents and violating terms of an earlier sentence.
