Thanks to leader of smoke ban campaign
Many thanks belatedly to Phil Landrum, who pioneered the Wheaton non-smoking ban. I understand that he interviewed the owners and wait staffs at every Wheaton restaurant and bowling alley to get their opinions and to help clear the air on this important issue. As I recall, he learned that most of the people who serve us in our eateries favored snuffing out smoking in their establishments. Phil gave his survey results to his colleagues on the Environmental Improvement Commission who approved an anti-smoking ordinance as did the City Council later.
I don't know of any other Wheaton resident who would have been willing to do the legwork that Phil logged to make our public places safer and more pleasant. His campaign has made Wheaton a leader among Illinois municipalities on this issue.
Many thanks, also, to the Wheaton restaurant owners who have been complying with the non-smoking ordinance even though it is hurting their businesses, as some people are opting for neighboring communities that still prefer nicotine-flavored food. I hope these local restaurants will be able to survive until the statewide smoking ban takes effect next year.
We should all thank Phil for letting us enjoy our meals, no longer bothered by second-hand smoke. As a result of his vision, dedication and hard work, we are healthier and happier.
