For Entrepreneurs: Interactive workshops addressing these topics for entrepreneurs will be offered during November by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County. Workshops are held in the Technology Building at the CLC Grayslake campus unless otherwise noted.

• Maximizing Public Relations (TBSM 54) will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. today. The workshop will cover the effective use of public relations and media relations to grow a business with minimum investment. Participants will also learn how to write an effective news release. The course fee is $35.

• QuickBooks Module 1 - A Practical Introduction (TBSM 20) will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the CLC Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills. This hands-on workshop will cover financial statements, including profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet and breakeven. The course fee is $149.

• Legal Fundamentals for Small Businesses (TBSM 81) will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Topics include the best way to structure a company: sole proprietorship, Limited Liability Company or S or C Corporation. The presenter is Brian Fons, president and regional counsel of Corporate Creations Chicago LLC. The course fee is $40.

New York theater trip: See four Broadway shows during a guided group tour over spring break 2008, sponsored by the College of Lake County. The five-day, four-night New York theater trip will run March 25 to 29 and include tickets to four Broadway shows, round-trip nonstop airfare from O'Hare, lodging for four nights in the Broadway show district and free time for sightseeing and shopping.

An informational meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in Room E124 (in the Job Center) at the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus. The total trip cost is $1,895 per person double occupancy. A $900 deposit is due on the registration deadline Monday.

Food and Beverage Servers: The College of Lake County will offer the Beverage and Alcohol Sellers and Servers Educational Training (BASSET - PSST15) course. This four-hour class is certified by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and will be offered on Dec. 1. The cost is $35. A Spanish version of the class (PSST61) will be offered on Wednesday.

Explore health careers: Learn about the health care profession and what it takes to train for a career in health care at an information session from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Room T332 (Technology Building) on the Grayslake campus.

The session will provide information on certified nurse assisting, dental hygiene, emergency medical technician, massage therapy, medical assisting, medical billing, medical coding, medical imaging, medical office work, medical transcription, nursing, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy, surgical technology and pre-professional programs such as pharmacy, medicine and veterinary medicine. Training for these careers can be completed in two years or less.

The Crucible":" target="new">"The Crucible": "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller will be presented by the College of Lake County Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake campus.

Based on the Salem witch trials of 1692, this drama tells the story of a group of young women who are accused of witchcraft.

Tickets are $10 each for the general public and $8 for CLC students/staff, seniors 65 and over and JLC season subscribers. Prices include a $1 per ticket James Lumber Center restoration fee. 'Ultimate Cultural Music Fusion': A talent show organized by nine student cultural clubs from the College of Lake County will be presented from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the C Wing Auditorium (C005) on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

"Ultimate Cultural Music Fusion" will feature CLC students performing music and dance from a variety of cultures. The participating clubs are Asian Student Alliance, Black Student Union, Hillel, International Club, Japanese Culture and Language Club, Latino Alliance, Muslim Student Association, Pride Alliance and South Asian Student Association. An after-party will be held from 9 p.m. to midnight in Lancers cafeteria.

Multi-chamber event: Members of eight chambers of commerce from southern Lake County are invited to a multi-chamber after-hours event from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the College of Lake County's Southlake Educational Center classroom building, 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills.

With the theme "Up on the Roof," the event will feature tours and information on the green roofs at Southlake.

The participating chambers of commerce are Buffalo Grove, Highland Park, Deerfield/Bannockburn/Riverwoods, Highwood, Green Oaks/Libertyville/Mundelein/Vernon Hills, Greater Lincolnshire, Lake Forest/Lake Bluff and Lake Zurich.

Film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of independent films. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in Room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Upcoming films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:

bull; "Riding Solo on Top of the World" will be presented on Friday. Director Gaurav Jani covers thousands of miles on his motorcycle, from his home in Mumbai through the Changthang Plateau, one of the most remote places in the world. Along the way, he films his journey through the beautiful landscapes and the people he meets along the way, including the Buddhist Chang pas.

bull; "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming firsthand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

2007-08 Concert Season: The College of Lake County Music Department has planned its 2007-08 season. Concerts will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Paralegal information: Learn what it takes to begin a paralegal career at information sessions sponsored by the College of Lake County Paralegal Studies Program. Potential students will learn about the paralegal profession, the job outlook and CLC's paralegal certificate and the Associate in Applied Science degree. They will also meet the faculty and other students.

Information sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 28, from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 12 and from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15 in Room T 117 on the Grayslake Campus.

Discovery! Workshop: As part of College of Lake County's Discovery! program, designed for adult learners 50 and over, R.J. Lindsey will portray colorful businessman and Chicago banker Charles Gates Dawes from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 29. Brigadier General Dawes will share details about the politics and alliances that exploded into WWI. Dawes went on to become the first director of the Bureau of the Budget under President Warren Harding and served as vice president with Calvin Coolidge. The course fee is $15.

Holiday Dance Concert: This year's Holiday Dance Concert by the College of Lake County Prairie Spirits Dance Troupe will be a combination of various styles of dance and music -- jazz, classical, contemporary urban and holiday favorites -- interwoven with a holiday theme.

The dance concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

The dance concert will include a guest appearance by the Valerie Alpert Dance Company, a "Rockettes" style kick line number, the "Peanuts" comic strip gang, a tap number done to Frank Sinatra's "I Won't Dance," two sections of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and the "Guys and Dolls" number "Luck Be a Lady." In a modern dance finale, a piece called "The Tree," 15 dancers will use giant yoga balls as ornaments, stacking them into a "tree" they form with their bodies.

Thaddeus Rex: Thaddeus Rex, a nationally recognized children's songwriter, comedian and book nut, will perform a fun children's show at College of Lake County at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 in Room C 005 (C Wing Auditorium) on the Grayslake campus.

Tickets for this family-friendly show are $5 or the donation of one new or gently used book per person. Donated books will be given to the Lake County Reach Out and Reach Program. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

'Earnest' auditions: Actors from the community are invited to audition for the College of Lake County Theatre Department's spring production of the classic Oscar Wilde comedy, "The Importance of Being Earnest."

Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 5 in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake campus. Actors need only attend one audition.

Actors should bring an acting resume (if they have one) and prepare a two-minute memorized monologue from any comedy written before 1900. Callbacks will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Dec. 6. The play's director, Craig Rich, is looking for four women and five men for the cast. Copies of the play are available at the College of Lake County Library/LRC circulation desk for in-library reading.

Rehearsals will begin Jan. 14. Performances are scheduled for Feb. 22 to Mar. 1. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday evenings with the occasional Friday evening until technical rehearsal week. Actors should make sure they have these dates and times open before auditioning.

Veterans Monument: A new veterans memorial monument at the College of Lake County Grayslake campus is being planned, and the CLC Veterans Memorial Task Force is offering the opportunity for community members to purchase engraved bricks to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The engraved bricks will form the circular base of the monument, which will be built next to Willow Lake, in the grassy area between the C Wing and Library/Learning Resource Center. The monument will feature a life-sized bronze sculpture that depicts a member of the armed forces paying his respects at the grave marker of a fallen hero. Artist Cindy Seng of Libertyville will create the statue. The monument will also feature the seals of all five branches of the U.S. military, three flagpoles and up to 3,000 engraved bricks. Donations received from the fundraising drive will be used for the 2008 construction and ongoing maintenance of the monument.

For a contribution of $50 for one or $125 for three, four-by-eight-inch paver bricks will be engraved to honor a service member, and can include the name, rank, branch of service and dates of service. To order a brick or make a tax deductible contribution, contact the College of Lake County Foundation at (847) 543-2091. Checks can be made payable to the CLC Foundation for the Veterans Memorial Brick account and sent to 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake, IL 60030-1198.
