Bears' defense puts brakes on Fargas
The Raiders' Justin Fargas got his second start of the season Sunday.
He was hoping to continue his recent momentum and help the Raiders snap their four-game losing streak.
But the Bears' defense got in the way and spoiled the plans of the Raiders' newly installed starting rusher.
"Chicago's defense is a tough defense," Fargas said. "I give credit to them."
Fargas, who rushed for 104 yards with a touchdown a week earlier at home against Houston, had enjoyed a breakout game earlier this season in Miami when he rushed for 179 yards on 22 carries.
Against the Bears, who ranked 26th in the NFL allowing 130-plus yards per game, Fargas picked up 81 yards on 23 carries with a long run of 15 yards.
On one key play in the second half, Bears defensive lineman Israel Idonije hit Fargas after a 4-yard run and caused a fumble.
The Bears recovered the ball and proceeded to score on Cedric Benson's 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
The Bears' defense finished with 4 sacks and forced 2 fumbles.
The nail in the Raiders' coffin came when Danieal Manning intercepted quarterback Josh McCown's pass intended for Tim Dwight with seconds left in the game. Earlier in the first half, Manning had put a highlight-reel hit on Fargas.
"I thought we corrected some things, and it was good to see it out there on the football field today," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "We talked a lot about winning the turnover ratio, and that's been the story of each one of our game."
