Thyroid screenings: When the thyroid gland is out of balance, it affects the rest of the body, but thyroid disorders can be treated. During November, Condell Medical Center's four Immediate Care centers offer thyroid function screenings for patients age 18 and older. No appointment is needed. The cost for the test is $25 and cash, check or charge are accepted. Insurance will not be billed. Fasting is not required.

Thyroid screenings are available at Condell Immediate Care on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays:

• 6440 Grand Ave., Gurnee, (847) 249-2800, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

• 2 E. Rollins Road, Round Lake Beach, (847) 740-2500, open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

• 6 Phillip Road, Vernon Hills, (847) 680-0500, open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Fight stress: Attend a free informational session on the importance of relaxation during the holidays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Adult Day Room at Condell Medical Center's Day Center for Intergenerational care, 700 Garfield Ave., Libertyville, on the hospital's main campus.

Occupational therapist Elaine Kempers and physical therapist Allie Solomon will discuss and demonstrate preventative stretching techniques, principles of good body mechanics and other relaxation techniques.

Weight Management: Anyone who signs up for New Direction Weight Management of Condell during November or December will get their $100 initiation fee waived. Stop in at a free orientation session for more information about the variety of medically supervised weight loss programs available. Orientation sessions are held at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at the Libertyville Centre Club, located at 200 W. Golf Road on the hospital's main campus.

New Support Group: Condell Medical Center now offers an ongoing drop-in cancer support group that meets at 10 a.m. Wednesdays in the patient lounge on the fourth floor (north unit). This group welcomes patients with all types of cancer and aims to bring inpatients, outpatients and their families together to share the challenges they face and inspire each other to lead full lives. The support group is facilitated by two-time cancer survivor Bill Casale, M.Ed. in counseling, and Deacon Don Wheling, Condell Medical Center's pastoral care chaplain.

Breast cancer group: Condell Medical Center offers an ongoing breast cancer support group that is led by Peg Schuetz, a licensed clinical professional counselor, and Maggie David, a registered nurse and breast cancer survivor. The group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. every third Friday of the month at Condell's Intergenerational Day Center's solarium in the Allen Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave., Libertyville.
