Accused Schaumburg rapist tricked his victim, police reveal
Schaumburg police released new details Friday as they continued to search for a man who beat, robbed and raped a local woman in her apartment.
Sgt. John Nebl said while police have not compiled a sketch of the attacker, they do have an updated description.
The man spoke fluent Korean, Nebl said, and is thought to be of Korean descent, 35 to 40 years old and about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build.
The attack occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday on the 200 block of Routh Court.
The woman, who is about 40, had placed an ad in a Korean newspaper, Nebl said.
The attacker answered the ad and scheduled a meeting with the victim in her apartment, police said.
"He said he was responding to the add for his sister," Nebl said of the attacker.
After the woman let him into the apartment, the attacker hit her in the face with a handgun and demanded money, Nebl said.
After taking money from her purse, police said the attacker restrained and sexually assaulted her.
The attacker left with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
The victim, police said, was treated at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and released.
While stressing that such assaults are never the victim's fault, Sean Black, communications coordinator for the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said there are things women can do to reduce the risk of being attacked.
"Try to reduce your risks by being in public places and places that are well lit," Black said.
If you have to invite a stranger into your home, Black said, ask a friend or neighbor to be there with you.
