Briefs: Memorial groundbreaking

Members of the veterans memorial committee in Elgin will host a groundbreaking ceremony with city officials at 11 a.m. Sunday, Veterans Day, in a parking area just west of Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. The veterans committee has been working with city officials since 2006 to build the new memorial. Construction plans were delayed earlier this year because of environmental contamination found at the original site, north of the library.

Algonquin house historic

The Christian Geister House at 302 S. Main Street in Algonquin has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. Local carpenter Amos Wilburn began construction on a family residence for Christian Geister in 1893. Geister was one of the town's grist mill operators and the village treasurer. The home was purchased by Emma Estergren in 1909, and she lived there until her death in the 1970s. Besides its connection to the period of Algonquin's early growth, the Geister House features a number of classic ornate, asymmetrical Queen Anne architectural style features such as spindle work and turrets.

S. Elgin revises schedule

To save time, South Elgin village board meetings now will start right after the committee of the whole meeting ends, board members decided this week. Previously, officials held the committee of the whole meeting at 7 p.m. and waited until 8 p.m. to conduct the regular meeting. But the committee of the whole meeting was regularly ending after 15 minutes, leaving a large lag of time between both meetings.
