It's a telephone number, not letter

When did it become necessary for companies to become a bunch of puppets? In my lifetime, I have never asked anyone for their telephone letter. It is called telephone number. Companies are doing a disservice to potential customers by stating their telephone letters. I will not deal with any company I might be interested in doing business with if they only list their telephone letters. If they had brains they would list their telephone numbers.
