Man accused of sex assault
A Round Lake Beach man was arrested Wednesday accused of trying to sexually assault a 19-year-old woman along Lake County's Millenium Trail near Wauconda.
Robert J. Evans, 28, of 1426 Lotus Drive was charged with attempted sexual assault, aggravated battery and unlawful restraint.
Wauconda police picked up Evans after responding to a call at the Orchard Hills subdivision. Initially, police believed a man and a woman were fighting but later learned the Wauconda woman was attacked by a man along the trail.
An officer in the area saw Evans hiding in bushes along the trail and detained him because he matched a description given by the victim, police said.
Evans was handed over to Lake County Ranger Police because the trail falls under its jurisdiction.
Evans is listed on the Illinois Child Sex Offender registry. He was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a 16-year-old. He was 20 years old at the time.
Bond was set at $1 million. Evans has not posted bail and is being held at the Lake County Jail.
A preliminary hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26 in courtroom 120 of the Lake County courthouse, 20 S. County St., Waukegan.
