Major road project near bid stage

The intersection of Glen Ellyn Road and Fullerton Avenue is expected to be improved and widened next summer.

Director of Public Services Rick Dime said the project would widen the roads to expand the radius so more truck traffic could get through and upgrade the signals at the intersection.

The project will cost about $420,000. DuPage County will pay about $300,000 and Glendale Heights will pay about $120,000.

East of the intersection is Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, west is Glendale Heights' Village Hall, north is Army Trail Road and south is North Avenue.

"The village initiated the project with the county in order to widen out the eastern leg of that intersection so it's more conducive for wider trucks to make the turn," Community Development Director Martin Olsen said. "It's a major project, considering it's a fairly major intersection."

Dime said last summer a stretch of Fullerton Avenue was resurfaced and ended just before Glen Ellyn Road with this project in mind for the near future.

The project has been in the works for more than a year.

"It's a complex project," Dime said, "so it just takes a little more time to plan."

If all goes smoothly, the project should go out to bid in March, construction should begin in the summer and would be completed before winter 2008.
