Briefs: Scout fundraiser moved

The Girl Scouts of the Fox Valley Council's Holiday Harvest on Saturday has been relocated to Courtyard Banquets, 3S200 Route 59, Warrenville. Holiday Harvest is part of the council's 50th anniversary celebration with live and silent auctions, a dinner and cash bar. Tickets are $75 per person with $45 being tax deductible. Muslim journalist issue

Temple B'nai Israel will host a lecture at 10:45 a.m. Sunday by Dr. Richard Benkin on the case of Muslim journalist Salah Uddin Shoarb, at the temple, 400 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora. Shoarb, of Bangladesh, has been arrested, tried and sentenced for criticizing the agenda of some Muslim groups as anti-Islamic. There is a brunch at 10 a.m. for $6. To RSVP, call (630) 892-2450.

Science speaker at ECC

Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education, will discuss the creationism and evolution controversy Monday as part of Elgin Community College's speaker series. Scott's 11 a.m. presentation is "What Creationists Think About Evolution and Why It Is Wrong." At 7 p.m., Scott will present "The Evolution (And Stasis) of Creationism." Both presentations will be in the auditorium of the Advanced Technology Center on ECC's main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The presentations are free.

Music institute opening:

A ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday will mark the opening of American Music Institute, 214 S. Third St., St. Charles. The event, sponsored by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Museum gets map grant:

The St. Charles Heritage Center has announced the receipt of a $1,000 grant from the Thornapple Questers Chapter 308. The grant will be used to restore two maps, dating to 1855, that depict St. Charles at the time. The maps will be digitized and framed for archiving. The Heritage Center operates the St. Charles History Museum, 215 E. Main St.

Zylstra dealership honored

A St. Charles Harley-Davidson dealership has been awarded the manufacturer's 2007 Bronze Bar & Shield Circle of Achievement Award. Zylstra Harley-Davidson/Buell, 131 S. Randall Road, received the award based on sales, customer service and satisfaction, facilities, staff and operations, according to the dealership. The dealership opened in late 2006.

Children's grief seminar

Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice will offer "Grief, Loss, Change and the Transition Back to School" symposium for school personnel that would be in a supportive role of a grieving student.
