Devils open new home with win
The goals finally came for Jay Pandolfo and the New Jersey Devils, giving hockey fans in Newark, N.J., a reason to cheer.
Pandolfo scored 3 goals to lead New Jersey to a 6-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night, giving the Devils their first victory at the new Prudential Center arena.
John Madden scored a goal and assisted on all three of Pandolfo's goals. Aaron Asham and Zach Parise also scored for the Devils and Martin Brodeur, playing in his 900th game, made 21 saves as New Jersey halted a four-game losing streak.
Vincent Lecavalier scored for the Lightning, who have dropped all five road games.
Madden and Pandolfo scored in a span of 1:48 in the second period to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. Madden opened the scoring at 4:32, converting a centering feed from Dainius Zubrus.
Panthers 4, Hurricanes 2: Richard Zednik scored the go-ahead goal and host Florida scored 4 goals in the final period to beat Carolina for the first time in eight tries.
Trailing 1-0 entering the final period, the Panthers scored three goals in a 5:12 stretch. It started when Florida tied the score at 2 with 5:49 remaining on Jay Bouwmeester's first goal of the season.
Zednik's goal came during a 5-on-3 power play with 2:19 left and gave Florida a 3-2 lead. Nathan Horton added a power-play goal at 19:23.
Olli Jokinen also scored earlier in the third and had two assists for the Panthers.
