Mt. Prospect man named a United Way board VP

Dr. Gregory P. Guarrine, a longtime resident of Mount Prospect and superintendent of Prospect Heights School District 23, has been named first vice president of the Northwest Suburban United Way for fiscal year 2007-2008.

He is one of 25 board members who volunteer to work to improve lives by raising funds to help the United Way assess the needs of the community and then fund them, if deemed necessary. New initiatives are also launched to fill gaps in service.

Spanning 18 communities across the northwest suburbs and the Skokie Valley, the Northwest Suburban United Way engages local volunteers to work together to provide workable solutions to create healthier, safer communities. To make a donation or explore volunteer opportunities, phone (847) 768-1074 or log onto www.uwnorthwest.org.

Change your clocks this weekend: It is a week later this year, so none of us should be caught by surprise when we need to turn those clocks back one hour this Saturday night. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m., Sunday.

The Mount Prospect Fire Department is also reminding everyone that when they turn those clocks back they should also remember to change the batteries in their smoke detectors, especially now that the home heating season is upon us again.

Residents who cannot afford a smoke detector or have physical limitations that would prevent them from installing or maintaining their smoke detectors should contact that Fire Prevention Bureau at (847) 818-5253.

Genealogy assistance offered: Genealogy librarian Anne Shaughnessy at the Mount Prospect Public Library will present an overview of the "ancestry library edition" database to interested amateur genealogists at 7 p.m., Nov. 8 at the library, 10 S. Emerson St.

Make beaded jewelry: If you love the look of beaded jewelry and would like to try your hand at making some for gifts to yourself or others, the Mt. Prospect Park District has several classes planned.

Instructor Sally Smith will teach students the basics so that with some practice, they will soon be making their own "designer" pieces. The fee for each two-hour workshop is $35.

Workshops are scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday; and both 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Dec. 1.
