Briefs: Leaf pickup guidelines
St. Charles officials are reminding residents of rules relating to the city's annual leaf collection program, which began earlier this month. Residents are prohibited from raking or placing leaves on the street, which can plug up storm sewer systems. Violators face $500 fines. East High food drive
The St. Charles East High School Student Council will accept donations for the Salvation Army during a food drive Sunday. Nonperishable items such as canned or boxed foods can be dropped off in the main entrance of the school, at 1020 Dunham Road, from 9 to 11 a.m. Call (630) 677-6315.
Parenting workshops
Geneva School District 304 is sponsoring a series of free workshops for parents about teen drinking and drug use. Based on Bill Oliver's updated DVD series, "Parent to Parent: Lessons Learned," the classes provide direction to parents on how to protect their children from "toxic culture," recognizing the signs of an unhealthy child, managing the Internet in the home and discussing the common traps parents fall into. Sunset Racquetball and Fitness Center, 710 Western Ave., Geneva, will have an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 6. The Geneva Park District facility will raffle off a one-year membership, and visitors can enjoy a free workout that night. there will be free blood pressure checks, back screenings, fitness tests and a snack. Check for pre-diabetes
People suffering from pre-diabetes don't often have symptoms. Find out your risk with a free screening from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at Rush-Copley Heart Institute, 2088 Ogden Ave., Aurora. Tests will be done from 7:30 to 8 a.m. and Dr. Padmalatha Berikai, an endocrinologist, will talk about what your results mean, risk factors and prevention tips from 8 to 9 a.m. An eight-hour fast is required. Advocacy fundraiser on tap
Friends of Child Advocacy, a nonprofit organization that supports programs assisting severe physically and/or sexually abused children in Kane County, will benefit from a holiday shopping fundraiser from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 8 at Crate & Barrel in Geneva Commons along Randall Road. The evening will include complimentary wine, hors d'oeuvres and raffle prizes. The cost is $50 per person with $25 benefiting Friends of Child Advocacy and $25 given back to the donor as a Crate & Barrel gift card to use for shopping.
