Butcher finds shop online

After running the meat department of a grocery store in Tennessee for 10 years, Kevin Luman decided it was time for a change.

Luman wanted to own his own place. While searching on the Internet for a meat market, he found a butcher shop that recently went out of business in Libertyville.

He found it to be more cost effective to purchase an existing shop than start from scratch. He bought the equipment from the owner of the former Tripoli's butcher shop. Luman relocated and launched Kevin's Butcher Shop three weeks ago.

His shop is at 408 Peterson Road, north of the driver's license facility.

Luman said he carries prime and choice meats. He also carries seafood and a full line of chicken and pork. The new shop features Boars Head deli products. He can make sandwiches to order or customers can purchase lunchmeat by the pound.

Customer service is important to Luman.

"I appreciate feedback from my customers. I want them coming back in my door," he said.

Luman, 39, recently moved to Waukegan from Nashville where he worked for a major grocery chain.

Prior to working for the grocer, Luman, who grew up in Eastern Kentucky, owned his own grocery store in Kingston, Tenn. He ran the 10,000-square-foot store for five years before selling it.

Kevin's is open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Check twice: The Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce is making businesses aware of an increase in the use of fraudulent American Express gift checks in $500 denominations.

The chamber said that Amex does not issue $500 gift checks. Law enforcement has been in contact with American Express concerning the issue.

American Express' highest denomination is a $100 gift check. American Express is not taking the loss for these checks.
