Body found inside car in Busse Woods pond

A body was recovered from inside a car that drove into the north pond at Busse Woods Forest Preserve near Elk Grove Village Monday afternoon.

Divers also searched the water for other possible victims, but determined there were none, Elk Grove Village Deputy Fire Chief Scott Miller said.

Paramedics tried in vain to resuscitate the victim, who was ultimately pronounced dead at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, he said.

Two backpacks belonging to the still unidentified victim were found near the scene, Miller added.

A witness who apparently saw the small, four-door Mercedes sedan drive into the water called for help at about 12:30 or 12:45 p.m., Miller estimated.

Both Cook County Forest Preserve Police and paramedics from the Elk Grove Village Fire Department responded to the call.

The vehicle was pulled from the water and police are now investigating how it got there. The victim hasn't yet been identified.

Drownings are not unknown in Busse Woods. Among the incidents over the years was the drowning of a Chicago man who fell through the ice on a frozen lake there in December 2004.

Last year, the Arlington Heights Fire Department justified its purchase of a boat in part because of the ability it would give them to assist in water rescues at Busse Woods.
