Red Wings blast Sharks 5-1
The Detroit Red Wings started fast and didn't let up.
Valtteri Filppula scored his first goal of the season and also had an assist, and Tomas Holmstrom added a goal and an assist in Detroit's 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night in Detroit.
Andreas Lilja, Henrik Zetterberg and Kirk Maltby also scored in Detroit's fourth straight victory. Chris Osgood made 10 saves, allowing only Alexei Semenov's late power-play goal.
The 11 shots on goal are fewest San Jose has ever had in a road game. The previous low was 12.
"They played really, really well tonight, and we played really badly," Joe Thornton said. "That's not a good combination for us."
Canucks 3, Capitals 2: Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo extended his winning streak against Washington to 10 games, making 26 saves in the Canucks' victory host Washington.
Luongo is 7-0-3 with 2 shutouts in his last 10 starts against Washington, a run of dominance that dates to the 2003-04 season and includes when he was with Florida.
Sabres 4, Panthers 2: Drew Stafford's fluke goal with 8:48 left in the third period snapped a tie and helped visiting Buffalo end a three-game losing streak. Stafford scored when his wrist shot bounced off goalie Tomas Vokoun's blocker high into the air, then fell in behind Vokoun. Buffalo's Daniel Paille looked as though he might have tipped the puck, but the goal was awarded after video review.
Canadiens 7, Hurricanes 4: Tomas Plekanec had 2 goals and 2 assists to help visiting Montreal defeat Carolina.
Montreal scored 5 power-play goals, 4 in the first period, en route to its third straight victory.
Avalanche 3, Flames 2 (OT): Ryan Smyth scored 23 seconds into overtime to give visiting Colorado a victory over Calgary.
