Fatigue the likely culprit in fatal Kildeer crash
A two-car crash that killed a Lakemoor man Thursday in Deer Park may have been caused by fatigue, Kildeer police said Friday.
Eyewitness reports confirmed Craig Condill, 55, was driving a 1994 Chevy Lumina north on Ela Road around 4:25 p.m. when his car drifted to the left. It crossed the center line into the path of a southbound 2007 Freightliner utility truck hitting it head-on about ΒΌ mile north of Long Grove Road, police said.
Condill was pronounced dead at the scene. He died of multiple injuries from being pinned in the wreckage, autopsy results showed Friday.
His vehicle suffered "catastrophic damage" to the front end thrusting the engine into the passenger's compartment, police said.
The truck driver wasn't seriously injured but was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for evaluation. He was shaken up but is fine, police said.
"There won't be any charges," Kildeer Police Chief Jeffrey Lilly said. "The truck driver is a complete innocent party to this entire thing."
Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said Friday alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.
Neither was speed, according to police.
"We also did not see any medical conditions which may have contributed to the accident," Keller said.
Authorities' suspect Condill was tired, driving drowsy and probably fell asleep at the wheel.
"None of the witnesses that we interviewed indicated there were any signs of steering input or braking from the driver," Lilly said.
Police are investigating the fatigue theory further.
"Our detectives are doing a 24-hour history of each driver to see what they were doing," Lilly said.
Condill worked for Groot Industries, Inc., waste hauling and recycling service based in Elk Grove Village.
