Hawks call up Bolland for scoring
Dave Bolland has been a scorer on every level of hockey to this point in his career. Now the Blackhawks want to see if he can do it in the NHL.
Bolland, recalled from Rockford on Friday, had 215 points in 91 games his final two seasons of junior hockey for the London Knights from 2004-06, and last year at Norfolk in the American Hockey League had 49 points in 65 games.
"He gets points," said Hawks coach Denis Savard.
Drafted in the second round (32nd overall) by the Hawks in 2004, Bolland is one of those players that always seems to be around the puck.
"This is a really good opportunity for me here, it's a chance to get in this lineup," Bolland said. "I'm not going to be playing like I did in Rockford, getting 20 minutes a game. It's not that I'm going out looking for points. I want to make sure my defense and my all-around game are good and the points will come."
Bolland is lucky to playing hockey at all this season. He suffered a deep cut behind his knee from Patrick Kane's skate in a training camp scrimmage collision that could have been a lot worse.
"They said it just missed my hamstring," Bolland said. "Caught me on the back of knee, where there's no protection."
Bolland missed two weeks and ran out of time to make the team.
"He had such a good camp and then got hurt," Savard said. "We were going to give him a very serious look, but he had to go down after that and he has played well."
Injury report: Dave Bolland was recalled after the Hawks placed winger David Koci and defenseman Andrei Zyuzin on the injured reserve list Friday.
Koci will need time for his twice broken nose to heal following big fights in the last week with heavyweights Wade Belak of Toronto and Boston's Zdeno Chara.
Zyuzin left Thursday's 3-1 loss at Boston after aggravating a groin problem he had been playing through.
Defenseman Brent Sopel, who sat out in Boston with a sore groin, practiced Friday and is expected to play tonight against Atlanta at the United Center.
Tip-ins: The Hawks have lost three of their last five games at home, where the preseason plan was for them to be tougher to beat at the United Center. ... Center Yanic Perreault is proving why he is considered the best in the league at winning faceoffs. He was 6-0 on against Boston, making him 25-2 in the last three games he has played. ... The Hawks haven't played the Thrashers since Dec. 11, 2005 in Atlanta, when they won 5-4 in a shootout. This will be only the eighth time the teams have ever met.
