McHenry peace group to march
Instead of spending their Saturday watching college football or raking leaves, members of the McHenry County Peace Group will join thousands marching for peace in Chicago.
Expected to be the largest demonstration against the Iraq war the city has seen, Chicago's National Mobilization to End the Iraq War will be one of 11 antiwar marches held on Saturday.
Initiated by United for Peace and Justice, other marches will be held in Boston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco and Seattle.
McHenry Peace Group spokeswoman Libby Papalardo said about a dozen group members plan to take an 11 a.m. train downtown from Crystal Lake on Saturday.
"We're bringing our McHenry County Peace Group banner down and a lot of anti-war signs," she said.
Dependent on the weather, the group will don Peace Group T-shirts.
The event's opening rally begins at 1:30 p.m. at Union Park at Ashland Avenue and Washington Street.
A mass march begins at 2:30 p.m., followed by a 4:00 closing rally in Federal Plaza at Adams and Dearborn.
Speakers will include two Democratic members Congress, John Conyers of Michigan and Jan Schakowsky of Evanston.
The peace group has participated in a number of other marches against the Iraq war.
"Any time there's a really big mobilization, we try to make it. Numbers speak," she said.
