Symphonic band strikes up movies tunes

The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band will hold its sixth annual fall concert Saturday.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. at Buffalo Grove High School, 1100 W. Dundee Road.

The concert will focus on movies and dance and include pieces from "Mary Poppins," "The King and I," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Schindler's List" and "Exodus." The dance portion of the concert will include Riverdance, Four Scottish Dances, Hoe Down and the Polovetsian Dances by Alexander Borodin.

Keith Miller, a Wheeling resident who plays keyboard and percussion in the band, said the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band is a unique opportunity for him to keep up with music.

Miller studied music in college, and he said the band's director, his friend Howard Green, asked him to play a piano portion a few years back. He joined the band after that.

"What's unique about this band is the people who travel from long distances to play with the band," he said.

Tickets can be purchased at village hall, 50 Raupp Blvd., or through band members. Call village hall at (847) 459-2518. Tickets are $10 each in advance and $8 for students and seniors. Tickets will be $12 at the door.

Laying the groundwork: The Chicago Executive Airport board is getting ready in case a consultant decides to file a lawsuit to get unpaid money.

Wheeling village manager Mark Rooney, who also sits on the board, said last week that the board discussed what actions to take if John Kennedy acts on his threats of a lawsuit.

Kennedy, of Airport Corp. of America, was hired by the board's former chairman Kevin Dohm.

Dohm resigned in September after other board members questioned why Kennedy was hired and what work he was doing.

Rooney said the board didn't agree to hire Kennedy, and he believes the board shouldn't be paying him money.

Drive-through shots: The Wheeling fire department will once again have drive-through flu shots offered for residents who otherwise would have a difficult time getting the vaccinations.

The shots will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeling fire station, 255 W. Dundee Road, for resident over the age of 18.

Residents don't need to get out of their cars for the shots, and the department staff will also be checking the air in car tires.

Fire Chief Keith MacIsaac said last year they had just under 200 residents come through.

The shots are free for those with Medicare Part B insurance plans or $30.

Some good news: The construction of Cuba Road through Long Grove is 30 days ahead of schedule and will likely be done by Nov. 1 instead of Dec. 1, according to the village.

For now, the road is only handling eastbound traffic from Krueger to Old McHenry roads.
