Blood pressure screenings: The community is invited to the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan for a free blood pressure screening. Students from the CLC Medical Assisting program will conduct the health screening from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Wednesday as a community service. Registration is not required. The screening will be conducted in the Medical Assisting Lab, room S305, at the CLC Lakeshore Campus.
Discovery! Workshops: Actors and a College of Lake County instructor will bring historical events before, during and after World War I to life as part of College of Lake County's Discovery! program, designed for adult learners 50 and over.
• Leslie Goddard, an actress and character portrayer, will speak as Violet Jessup, the only person to survive the sinking of both the Titanic and her sister ship, the HMHS Britannic. Cost for attending the presentation Wednesday is $15.
• Dr. Phyllis Soybel, CLC history instructor, will follow with a three week class on the U.S. entry into World War I. The workshop meets on three Wednesday mornings from Oct. 31 to Nov. 14, and the course fee is $39.
• R.J. Lindsey will portray colorful businessman and Chicago banker, Charles Gates Dawes on Nov. 29. Brigadier General Dawes will share details about the politics and alliances that exploded into WWI. The course fee is $15.

New York theater trip: See four Broadway shows during a guided group tour over spring break 2008, sponsored by the College of Lake County. The five-day, four-night New York theater trip will run March 25 to 29 and include tickets to four Broadway shows, round trip non-stop air fare from O'Hare, lodging for four nights in the Broadway show district and free time for sightseeing and shopping.
Informational meetings will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in room E124 (in the Job Center) at the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus. The total trip cost is $1,895 per person double occupancy. A $900 deposit is due on the registration deadline, Nov. 19.

Scopes "Monkey" Trial: One of American history's most famous trials will be dramatized in an original play that depicts the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial title "And On the Eighth Day: Bryan v. Darrow," at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, in the C Wing Auditorium (C005) on the CLC Grayslake campus.
The play centers on the courtroom trial about the teaching of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in public schools.
Tickets are $10 for the 7 p.m. performance and $5 for the 10 a.m. performance, which is designed for middle and high school groups and includes a post-show question and answer session. Tickets are available at the CLC Box Office, by calling (847) 543-2300 or online at www.clcillinois.edu/tickets.
"Lean" business breakfast: Learn more about how an office or manufacturing facility can operate in the "Lean" world at a free breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at the CLC Grayslake Campus. 2007-08 Concert Season: The College of Lake County Music department has several concerts for its 2007-08 season. Concerts will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for CLC/seniors/children unless noted (price includes $1 JLC restoration fee). • Jazz Ensembles: Enjoy a variety of jazz, swing and big band music performed by the Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Fall Choral Concert: Dr. Charles Clency will conduct a variety music, performed by the CLC Singers, the Choir of Lake County and the Gospel Choir at 4 p.m. Sunday.
• Wind Ensemble: An afternoon of classical and modern music with the Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael Flack at 4 p.m. Nov. 4.
• Jazz Sunday: The CLC Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles featuring Los Angeles-based trumpeter Chuck Findley, who has played with Branford Marsalis and the NBC Tonight Show Band and the Buddy Rich Orchestra at 4 p.m. Nov. 18.
Make A Difference Day: About 100 volunteers from the College of Lake County will join millions of volunteers nationwide for service projects on Saturday, the 17th Make A Difference Day.
CLC volunteers include staff, students and faculty who will take on a variety of tasks. A kick-off breakfast will be held from 8 to 8:30 a.m. in the Learning Resource Center/Library Atrium at the Grayslake campus.
The crews will work at the following sites in Lake County on Saturday:
• Adopt A Highway: Volunteers will clean a section of the highway on O'Plaine Road.
• Christian Outreach of Lutherans: Volunteers will assemble the annual donation mailing to help prevent hunger and homelessness. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Community Action Partnerships/Hervey Homes: Students and instructors from the college's Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning program will conduct free furnace inspections and cleanings for low-income homeowners.
• Gateway Foundation: Volunteers will help plant fall mums. Gateway Foundation serves the needs of adults and teens who struggle with alcohol, drug and mental health issues. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Family First Support Community Center: Volunteers will help clean a community center. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Northern Illinois Food Bank: Volunteers will sort, inspect and repackage meat into 20 pound boxes. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Park Place Senior Center: Volunteers will help paint the indoor entrance to the center. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Prairie Crossing Learning Farm: Volunteers will help with tasks that assist their organic garden. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Save-A-Pet: Volunteers will help with feeding and exercising the shelter's animals and cleaning. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Staben Center: Volunteers will help plant mums for Historical Preservation Day. This center is a transitional housing unit for homeless men. Time: 9 a.m. to noon.
• Waukegan Park District: Volunteers will assist with Waukegan Park District's annual Halloweenfest as game booth assistants, non-scary characters for the preschool-aged Enchanted Walk and Haunted Trails helpers for youth-adult visitors. Time: three-hour shifts from 2:15-8:30 p.m.

Social Sciences classes: Several topics will be explored in courses offered by the Social Sciences division at the College of Lake County this fall.
Chicago's distinctive urban personality will be examined in History of Chicago (HST 299-001) from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. Wednesdays. This historical survey will take students on a journey through Chicago history to learn how it was built and the ways a distinctive type of urban society was created.
Wayne Hunter, one Lake County's premier criminal investigators, will use his many years of law enforcement experience to help students figure out what makes criminals tick in The Criminal Mind (CRJ 215-001) from 6 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesdays. Hunter will apply psychological theories to offenders with personality disorders, serial killers and the criminally insane. Hunter is a retired 12-year veteran of the Waukegan Police Department who had assignments with the Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Purchasing Open House and Vendor Fair: "Doing Business with the College of Lake County," a vendor fair for area businesses and minority vendors, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 in Room C003, located in the lower level of the C Wing at the College of Lake County.
This free open house will provide area businesses and minority vendors with the opportunity to learn how to do business with CLC and get information about upcoming projects and purchasing needs. Representatives from higher education and government agencies will also participate in this reverse vendor fair, including purchasing, information services, construction, printing, etc.
Businesses will also be able to fill out vendor applications with the college and the other agencies. All vendors will sit at individual tables/booths and government representatives will visit the tables to answer questions and provide information. Refreshments will be available for participants.

Veterans Monument: A new veterans memorial monument at the College of Lake County Grayslake campus is being planned, and the CLC Veterans Memorial Task Force is offering the opportunity for community members to purchase engraved bricks to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The engraved bricks will form the circular base of the monument, which will be built next to Willow Lake, in the grassy area between the C Wing and Library/Learning Resource Center. The monument will feature a life-sized bronze sculpture that depicts a member of the Armed Forces paying his respects at the grave marker of a fallen hero. Artist Cindy Seng of Libertyville will create the statue. The monument will also feature the seals of all five branches of the U.S. military, three flagpoles and up to 3,000 engraved bricks. Donations received from the fundraising drive will be used for the 2008 construction and ongoing maintenance of the monument.
Before and after the annual CLC Veterans' Day ceremony at noon on Nov. 9, members of the task force will be present to provide information and accept donations for the tribute brick campaign.
For a contribution of $50 for one or $125 for three, four-by-eight-inch paver bricks will be engraved to honor a service member, and can include the name, rank, branch of service and dates of service. To order a brick or make a tax deductible contribution, contact the College of Lake County Foundation at (847) 543-2091. Checks can be made payable to the CLC Foundation for the Veterans Memorial Brick account and sent to 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake, IL 60030-1198.

National French Week: The food and films of France will be celebrated at the College of Lake County during National French Week, Nov. 2 to 9. Admission to the following events is free unless noted:
• The film "Après Vous" (2003) will be shown at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in Room A162. "Après Vous" is a comedy about death, love and French food.
• A French Dessert Demonstration will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in Room C003. Michael Maddox, chef/owner of Le Titi de Paris, will present a demonstration of French desserts.
• The film "Vatel" (2000) will be shown at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in Room C003. This 2000 Cannes Film Festival selection with Gérard Depardieu as Vatel, tells the true story of the Masterchef of Prince de Condé, who plans a magnificent dinner and spectacular entertainment in honor of King Louis XIV and 2,000 members of the court when disaster strikes.
• A French Luncheon will be held at Le Titi de Paris in Arlington Heights from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 9. Dine on a three-course luncheon with chef/owner Michael Maddox. Paid reservations are required by Oct. 25; the cost is $30.

"Solid Blues" Concert: The new touring show "Solid Blues" will come to CLC at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. The featured performer will be gospel, soul and blues legend Mavis Staples, appearing with harmonica great Charlie Musselwhite, the blues-infused rock and roll trio North Mississippi Allstars and pianist/organist Joe Krown.
Staples is winner of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award.

Children's shows: Parents and young audience members will be entertained by shows at the College of Lake County this fall organized by the Student Activities Program Board and performed by the Round Lake Park District.
"Once Upon a Wolf," in which the Big Bad Wolf decides he wants to be the good guy for a change and sets off on a mission to become a hero will be performed at 2 and 4 p.m. Nov. 4.
Entertainer Thaddeus Rex will perform at 2 p.m. on Dec. 2, with original songs and stories, comedy, acting, music and audience participation. Each audience member is invited to bring a new or gently-used book to donate in exchange for free admission. Without a book, tickets are $5 per person. The books will be donated to the Lake County Reach Out and Read program.
