Vernon Hills Park District notes

Fall Fest: Fall Fest will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Sullivan Community Center. Children will enjoy trick-or-treating from local vendor's tables in addition to a magic show, balloon artist, face painter, crafts, Panic Room, carnival games and costume contest. Refreshments will be available for sale. Tickets are $1 per person, 2 years and older, and can be purchased at the Sullivan or Laschen Community Centers. Tickets will be $5 on the day of event.

Co-ed Volleyball Clinic: This co-ed class for third- through eighth-graders teaches participants the fundamentals of volleyball in a team setting. Instruction will focus on passing, setting, spiking, serving and blocking, while stressing the importance of discipline and teamwork as it equates to success on the court. Participants will be grouped according to playing skill. Third to fifth grade will meet at 6:30 p.m. and sixth to eighth grade will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 29 to Dec. 3 at Hawthorn Middle School South, 600 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. There is a fee of $105.

Fitness training for teens: This class is an introduction to total body weight training and conditioning for teens in seventh through 12th grade. Participants will learn proper techniques to strengthen all major muscle groups. Class will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 29 to Nov. 15 at the Sullivan Community Center in the Fitness Center. There is a fee of $75 for residents, $94 for nonresidents.

Fitness training for adults: The goal of this class is for participants to lose extra pounds and gain strength at the same time while learning about body shaping, weight training and conditioning. Class will concentrate on overall strength conditioning, cardiovascular fitness, diet and nutrition. Class is offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 29 to Nov. 15 at the Sullivan Community Center. There is a fee of $75 for residents, $94 for nonresidents.

Scrapbooking 101: This is a class for adults who are interested in organizing their photos by creating scrapbooks. The instructor will provide tips on how to sort and organize your photos in one evening, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Laschen Community Center. Participants will learn the basics of scrapbooking and how to complete quick and simple pages. Bring two to eight pictures of a family trip or recent event to create a page to take home. Refreshments and supplies will be available. There is a fee of $18 for residents, $22 for nonresidents.

Spanish Kids Club: An introduction to Spanish for ages 3½ to 7 using Comfort Zone Learning and an "out-of-your-chair" approach. Each meeting is based on one theme, such as toys, clothing, food, colors, numbers and parts of the body. Crafts, show-and-tell, guessing games, songs, stories and magic tricks will keep children engaged. Class meets from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 30 to Dec. 4 in the Laschen Center. There is a fee of $62 for residents, $78 for nonresidents.

Public hearing: A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Century Room in the Laschen Community Center. The Park District will discuss two issues with residents who may be affected by future park district plans and developments.

The park district was contacted by residents living near Evergreen Lake with a request to consider installing aerators in Evergreen Lake to help prevent the growth of algae blooms.

Also, a request was received from a Deerpath Park neighbor to discuss future improvements to the park area along Deerpath Drive known as "Five Acres."

All Vernon Hills residents are invited, but the district especially requests those residents living near Evergreen Lake and Five Acres to attend and offer comments.

Checkmate Chess: Both beginners and experienced chess players ages 6 to 13 will learn from an experienced Chess Scholars coach. Each class will consist of an interactive teaching period and guided practice time. There will be a chess competition with prizes at the end of the session. No previous knowledge of chess is necessary. Class will be held at 6 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 1 to Dec. 13 in the Laschen Center. There is a fee of $72 for residents, $90 for nonresidents.

Holiday Weight Watch: This is a fast-moving weight training and cardiovascular class designed for adults who want to lose weight or control their weight over the holidays. Class will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 6 through Dec. 13 in the Park District Fitness Center. There is a fee of $100 for residents, $125 for nonresidents.

Digital Photo Album: Create a digital story book using a free Story Book Creator software program. Participants will be guided through the easy-to-use software. Participants with laptops can bring them along, but it's not required. Class will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Laschen Center. The Nov. 7 class will have the theme "Create a Digital Photo Album for a Christmas Gift." There is a fee of $25 for residents, $31 for nonresidents, which includes supplies and free Digital Photo Album software.

Buying and Selling Homes: "What You Need to Know Before Buying and Selling Homes" is a seminar from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Laschen Community Center. The class is designed to teach the steps needed for a successful home purchase or sale. The class is presented by Coldwell Banker Realty; Talman Mortgage; Marc Schwartz, attorney; Finishing Touch Redesigns -- Home Staging; and Martin Home Inspections. There is a fee of $20 for residents, $25 for nonresidents.

Magic Class: Kids will learn mind-reading and tricks using playing cards, ropes and coins from a professional magician at 6 p.m. for ages 4 to 8 and 7 p.m. for ages 8 to 14 Nov. 7 at the Sullivan Center. Each participant will take home a magic kit. There is a fee of $16 for residents, $20 for nonresidents.
