Cinderella Jacobs does it again
Midnight hasn't struck yet for Cinderella Jacobs.
Mark Kyszka made sure of that.
After scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 upset win over No. 2 seed St. Viator Wednesday night, Kyszka provided the heroics again Saturday night.
With 6:33 left in the third overtime, the Jacobs junior drilled a shot past Cary-Grove goalie Keenan Walsh as the 17th seeded Golden Eagles stunned the seventh-seeded Trojans 2-1 in the championship game of the Class AA Jacobs regional. Kyszka's goal was assisted by Brian Obmalay.
Jacobs (10-15) moves to the Lake Zurich Sectional where it will play Palatine Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"I was able to use the wind to my advantage and I got a great pass from Brian Obmalay," said Kyszka. "I was pretty sure the ball was going in the net. It felt good when it left my foot. We felt we were a good team even when we struggled in the regular season. We stuck together and have played very well in the regionals."
Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo was pleased with the outcome and the play of Kyszka.
"Mark hit the shot just the way we wanted him to," said Dzialo. "He cut it right across the wind. Cinderella is still alive. We are really coming together as a team in the regionals. We played well in beating (Dundee-) Crown to end the regular season and played well in the tournament against Prairie Ridge, St. Viator and Cary-Grove."
Cary-Grove (15-6) struck first before the fans could even settle in their seats. With only 2:26 elapsed in the match, Andy Martin scored off a perfect pass from Kyle Blank to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Jacobs goalie Danny Trevor kept Cary-Grove off the scoreboard the rest of the night.
Jacobs finally tied the score at 1-1 with 8:43 left in the game when Brad Schmickley beat Walsh right in front of the net. Schmickley's goal was set up by a pass from Obmalay.
Cary-Grove out-shot Jacobs 13-7. Trevor had 7 saves for the Golden EagleswWhile Walsh made 4 saves for the Trojans.
"I am very proud of the kids," said Cary-Grove coach Mark Olson. "They left it all on the field. We just didn't finish. It was a very tough and disappointing way to end the season. But give Jacobs credit. They played a great match."
