Role-model clauses for pro athletes

One way that professional sports organizations can get a handle on the recent issues regarding player behavior is to include what I would the "role model clause" in contracts. Every professional athlete should be considered a role model once they sign a contract. And every professional athlete is bound in their contract by society's laws and rules, morally and ethically.

The role model behavior rules would be similar to those imposed by high school districts on their athletes - commonly called the code of conduct. Since many of the professional athletes began their careers and training in high school, they should be familiar with these rules. The high school code states that it is a privilege, not a right, to play sports. That same rule should apply to those athletes that can influence our children. It is a privilege to be a professional athlete - not a right!

The penalty for infractions would be removal from the team and payroll - period. They know the laws and they should expect consequences.

This may sound harsh, but think of all the other athletes that were cut from the team's roster in order for the rule breaker to get his/her spot on the team. Is it fair to the law-abiding athletes to be cut from the roster while the law breakers reap huge benefits?

I believe that professional athletes should be responsible and accountable for their actions on and off the field. Life is about choices and consequences. If athletes know there will be consequences for their actions - before signing the contract - they would think twice before making bad choices - after signing the contract.

One sports commissioner is saying his athletes should not be considered role models. What should the fans think of those athletes? If they are not role models why are fans paying their (commissioners and players) salaries?
