St. Edward fall play opens Oct. 26

The 2007-08 St. Edward High School drama season will open with the Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's comedy "You Can't Take It With You." Performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 26-28 in the school gymnasium, 335 Locust St., Elgin. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the door.

Although the story of the play may be familiar to most theatergoers, it goes like this: At first, the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder.

In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. Tony, the attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime, Tony, who knows that the Sycamores are right and his own parents are wrong, will not give her up. In the end, Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, particularly since he happens in during a visit by an ex-grand duchess, who now earns her living as a waitress.

The cast consists of 19 students from around the suburbs: Erin Minogue of Gilberts plays Penny (Mrs.) Sycamore; Joe Haggenjos of West Dundee plays Martin Vanderhof (grandpa); Katie Holdren of Elgin plays Alice and Will Lytle of Elgin plays Tony.

Other cast members from Elgin are David Dolivo who plays Paul (Mr.) Sycamore; and Kate Marsh and Megan Smith, both of whom play undercover detectives. Natalie Tarnowski of Hampshire plays Essie Sycamore-Carmichael and Justin Glombicki of East Dundee plays her husband, Ed Carmichael. Chrissy Ruiz of Sleepy Hollow plays Rheba and Juan Gonzalez of South Elgin plays her beau, Donald. Andy Krupp of Bartlett plays Mr. DePinna, Seth Deatherage of Sycamore plays Boris Kolenkhov and Kristine Arboleda of South Elgin plays Grand Duchess Olga Katrina. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby are played by Jim Ziesk of Streamwood and Katy Lally of St. Charles, respectively.

Rounding out the cast are Garrett Coble of Aurora as Henderson, Amanda Beck of Streamwood as Gay Wellington, and Brent Craig of Streamwood as an undercover detective.
