Briefs: Dist. 62 OKs contract

Des Plaines Elementary District 62 approved a new contract with its teachers' union, which includes a 3 percent pay raise for each year. Board members and the district's 400 union teachers have ratified the new three-year contract. It covers teachers through August 2009. Under the new agreement, a mandatory mentoring program will be created for first- and second-year teachers. A committee of board members and teachers will be formed to look at teaching beyond the traditional school day, such as sessions during lunch, to help those students who need it. Teachers would be compensated for their extra time under the proposal.

Gilberts woman arrested

A 30-year-old Gilberts woman was arrested and charged in Mount Prospect with endangering the life of a child after she left her 3-year-old daughter alone in a mall parking lot. Marina Druy, 30, 252 Telluride, was arrested at 2:30 p.m. Friday at 999 N. Elmhurst Road. A woman had called police after she saw the girl climb out of her car seat, open a car door and walk around the parking lot until the caller stopped and held her, reports said. Druy returned to the car shortly after officers arrived, reports said.

Man hurt in gang attack

Fifteen to 20 males carrying baseball bats and screaming gang tirades smashed the rear patio windows around 9 p.m. Saturday at an apartment building on the 1900 block of West Algonquin Road, Mount Prospect police said. According to reports, two men were sitting on the patio when the gang walked up; one man ran into the apartment, but the second man was attacked and beaten with the bats and had cuts and bruises on his left temple and the top of his head. He did not wish to sign a complaint, but an apartment manager indicated she would sign a complaint if the offenders were arrested, reports said. Damage was estimated at $500.

Drug arrest in Bartlett

A 24-year-old Bartlett man was charged Monday with felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver after police said they searched his car and found about 120 grams of alleged marijuana in five separate bags, along with more than $1,800 in cash. Bartlett police said they pulled over Jose Alba, of 104 Daniel Court, at about 11 a.m. for an expired registration sticker and arrested him for driving on a suspended license. Alba was also issued citations for no valid registration and invalid registration. He was taken to Cook County jail in Rolling Meadows to have bond set, though that amount was unavailable.

Little League seeks signs

The Bartlett Little League, in an effort to generate more revenue, is seeking approval by the village to sell sponsor signs that would be placed at the top of the three baseball scoreboards at Koehler Field, located on Route 25 south of West Bartlett Road. The village currently allows only temporary banners. Bartlett Little League President John Stanko said installing the permanent signs has become especially important because of the exposure the league will get in 2008 when Koehler Field hosts the celebrated State Tournament for All-Stars. Several village trustees on Tuesday said they're concerned they may not have any control as to the content of the advertisements, such as alcohol or tobacco products. The board postponed the vote on whether to approve the signs until the extent of the trustees' say-so is clarified.
