Fire displaces residents

The fire was under control in less than 10 minutes, but the owner's dog died. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Long Grove, Wauconda and Barrington fire departments assisted at the scene.

Neighbor spots fire

An alert neighbor possibly saved a Vernon Hills house from destruction when he noticed fire burning on a backyard wooden deck on the 200 block of Alexandria Drive Friday. Countryside Fire Protection District officials were called to the house at 6:01 p.m. Police on the scene put out most of the fire with an extinguisher and a garden hose. No one was injured. Embers from an outdoor fire pit started the blaze. Fire officials remind residents not to place fireplace or fire pit residue in combustible containers or surfaces, and they recommend that the materials be soaked in water.
