Teens events at the library: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities especially for them.
Special events to celebrate Teen Read Week, Sunday through Oct. 20, include a Peeps Diorama Contest, currently under way, in which teens will create a shoe-box-sized scene using the marshmallow treats. The dioramas will be displayed during Teen Read Week.
The Anime Club will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
For the first time, Dance Dance Revolution will be available at the library during an after-hours teen lock-in from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Teens must obtain a ticket and have parental permission to attend.
Depression Era Glass: The Warren-Newport Public Library will host Glassy Lady Antiques in the presentation "Depression Era Glass" at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Collector Beverly Kennett will display selected pieces and discuss types of Depression Glass. Registration is required for the free program. Do not bring pieces for appraisal.
Get Bugged: Kids in kindergarten and up are invited to learn about "Incredible Insects" at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Using live creatures, animal artifacts, songs and short stories, insect expert David Stokes will present this educational program in an entertaining way. Registration is required.
Dogs in the library: Kids in kindergarten and older are invited to "How Dogs Help People" at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 with a service dog demonstration by Robin's Dog Stars. And at 2 p.m. Oct. 20, Save-a-Pet will present information on adoption and introduce some furry friends in need of a home. Pet supply donations will be welcomed at the library until Oct. 20.
Library Cafe: Visitors to the Warren-Newport Public Library can enjoy their coffee and more with the opening of K-Sweets Cafe. The cafe serves sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, sweets and paninis. The cafe is also a free wireless hotspot. For more information, call (847) 782-2233.
Monthly gatherings: Several library-sponsored groups meet monthly at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and welcome new members. Three book discussion groups cover fiction and non-fiction on scheduled days, evenings and Saturdays. Stitch and Share meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Lovely and Lively Ladies of the Library, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday. Finally, the Friends of the Library, meet at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday.
