DUI charges filed in crash that killed driver's four friends

Bond was set at $250,000 Thursday for a 24-year-old Crystal Lake man accused of driving into a tree, killing four friends, while he was high on marijuana.

Fakir Muhammad Jaffrie surrendered to Kane County authorities Wednesday after being charged in the September crash.

Jaffrie first was charged with driving too fast for conditions and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, but blood tests since have shown Jaffrie had marijuana in his system, officials said Thursday.

Jaffrie now is charged with four counts of aggravated DUI, eight counts of reckless homicide and two misdemeanor counts of DUI with marijuana in his system.

If convicted, he faces up to 28 years in prison.

His next court date is 9 a.m. today, when Jaffrie's attorney will ask Judge Allen Anderson to reduce Jaffrie's bond.

The 2003 Infiniti G35 carrying the five men was heading west on Dietrich Road, between Brier Hill Road and Route 20 west of Huntley, when it left the road and hit a tree around 3:30 a.m. Sept. 8.

"(The) defendant used an incline, a hill, on Dietrich Road to cause the vehicle to become airborne," read part of the charges.

Ayush Joshi, a 20-year-old from Hoffman Estates and 2005 graduate of Conant High School, and Zohair Husain, an 18-year-old from Huntley who graduated from Huntley High School earlier this year, were pronounced dead at the scene. Kumail Husain, 20, of Algonquin and Henry Onwualu, 19, of Huntley died later from their injuries.

Authorities have said the five men might have been headed to an all-night truck stop on Route 20 in Hampshire when the crash occurred.
