New West Nile virus cases
The Illinois Department of Public Health today reported eight new human cases of West Nile virus bringing the state total this year to 68. The new cases include a 50-year-old woman and 60-year-old man from Lake County, a 30-year-old DuPage County man, and a 50-year-old McHenry County man. This time last year, the state health department received reports of 215 human cases of West Nile virus. Four people have died in Illinois related to West Nile virus in 2007. So far this year, 40 counties have reported mosquito samples, birds, horses or humans positive for West Nile virus. The virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Most people with the virus have no clinical symptoms of illness, but some may become ill three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. For information, visit www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/wnv.htm or call the West Nile virus hotline at (866) 369-9710 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Truck pulls down lines
An oversized truck carrying a tall load took down overhead power and cable lines in the area of Main and Church streets in Lake Zurich Wednesday. Police closed the intersection about 2:50 p.m. delaying area traffic, primarily from Lake Zurich High School, for more than an hour. Lake Zurich Unit District 95 parents were notified of the accident and possible delays to school buses arriving at homes through a new School Messenger rapid alert system. ComEd power service was interrupted but restored relatively quickly. The oversized load was a tall piece of earth-moving equipment. Police will be issuing citations to the truck driver after completing the accident investigation, said Lake Zurich police Cmdr. Kevin Finlon.
