Friends to host book sale at library

The Friends of the Prospect Heights Public Library, 12 N. Elm St., Prospect Heights, will sponsor its fall used book sale from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Proceeds from the sale help in the purchase of items which are not covered by the library's budget, including the sponsorship of special programs for the public, as well as educational materials for children.

Alexian offers lung disease information

"Catch Your Breath," a free community workshop focusing on gender differences in lung disease, will be held Saturday at Alexian Brothers Hospital, 800 Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village. Registration and breakfast are at 9 a.m. and the program ends at noon. Topics are: "Asthma," "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease" and "Lung Cancer." Blood donors needed Tuesday

The Des Plaines Community Blood Drive will be from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Des Plaines Library, 1501 Ellinwood St. LifeSource is coordinating the blood drive. Individuals wishing to donate are encouraged to call (847) 803-7943.

Blood demands remain constant throughout the year across the country, but Illinois is particularly always on the verge of a shortage because of the high volume of demands in the area.

Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Oct. 18

Plans are under way for the Des Plaines Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, hosted by the Des Plaines Ministerial Association and the city, which will take place at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 18, at Casa Royale Banquets, 783 Lee Street, Des Plaines. The event, hosted by Mayor Tony Arredia, will feature Nancy Loo, Channel 32, Fox News anchor. Highlighting this year's Mayor's Prayer Breakfast will be a musical interlude by local vocalist Becky Danegger. Tickets, which are $25 per person, are available from the Mayor's Office, 6th Floor City Hall, 1420 Miner St. Des Plaines. Call (847) 391-5301.

Juried art show this weekend

Artists Association of Elk Grove Village will host a juried art show, Art Centre 2007 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Elk Grove Village Library, 1001 Wellington, Elk Grove Village. More than 125 works by area artists will be on display and for sale.

Learn how to write family history

The Des Plaines History Center will host a free program called, "Write Your Family History Now" at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the History Center's Visitor Center, 781 Pearson St., Des Plaines. Genealogist Mike Karsen will explain the basics of genealogical research and offer suggestions on how to write a family history. No reservations are required.
