Full-service salon to rock Roselle's downtown

Downtown Roselle has given birth to a rock star.

But it's not human. This rock star comes in the form of a new business that hopes to make visitors feel like celebrities.

Rockstar Salon, a full-service salon and spa, will be the third most visible business in the village's new Town Center on Main Street. Its owners hope to open for business this month.

Michael Buonincontro and his sisters, Rachel Buonincontro and Ann Perez, own the salon. The siblings, each lifelong residents of Roselle, plan to shower their clientele with the spoils of elegance.

"You don't have to be a celebrity to be treated like a rock star," Michael Buonincontro said.

The salon will offer manicures, pedicures, hair coloring and style services, skin care treatments, make-up and beauty consultations and massage therapy.

Its rooms create an ambiance that blends a chic urban atmosphere with a European aura. Black crystal chandeliers and sconces adorn its ceilings and walls. A vintage-looking finish accents its walls. Instead of the classical barbershop setup, clients will get their hair done at what appears to be a bar.

The spa also will offer Keune hair products and services. Keune Haircosmetics, a company based in the Netherlands, is very popular in Europe. Its products and methods made its way to the United States about a decade ago, but not many salons carry it yet.

To further create a European atmosphere, the siblings are looking into the possibility of including wine in certain spa packages.

"There will always be somebody there to make sure you are attended to. It's about customer service," Perez said. "We want it to be a little downtown salon where everybody knows everybody."

Between all three siblings, they have roughly 30 years of experience working at various upscale salons in the Chicago area. This is their first consolidated business venture, but they've worked together at other salons.

When they decided to open a salon, the siblings considered other locations in Roselle but eventually chose the new Town Center.

Though the center's construction was completed three years ago, what was envisioned as a catalyst for downtown economic revival has struggled to capture tenants.

That could soon change. The center now has an ice cream and candy store, art studio and a few offices.

In addition, construction started on a new bank and a Starbucks at the corner of Roselle Road and Main Street. Starbucks initially announced it would open in spring or summer of 2008. But now the much-anticipated coffee giant plans to open before Christmas.

"They are fast-tracking that bad boy," Roselle Community Development Director Patrick Watkins said. "They may even be trying to beat the holidays."

Rockstar will be directly across from Starbucks. Village officials hoped the coffee shop would attract more businesses into downtown. It partially attracted Rockstar.

But village officials initially wanted a restaurant where the salon is located.

"That was our initial plan, and we certainly held the line for many years to have that happen," Roselle Mayor Gayle Smolinski said.

"However, this is certainly a use permitted in the area and they have a clientele from far and wide. So they will be proving an opportunity for these people to come to our downtown and see what we have to offer."

The salon will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
