Seminars for entrepreneurs: Seminars in do-it-yourself Web design, buying and selling a business, global business opportunities and basic record keeping will be offered during October by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County.

Seminars will be taught by industry professionals and are designed to quickly improve students' business knowledge and skills.

Fees for the following courses range from $35 to $70 and are held at the CLC Grayslake campus unless indicated:

• How to Buy or Sell a Business (TBSM 41) will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Learn how to evaluate opportunities, value a business, strategize, negotiate and gain desired results. The instructor is Andrew Sagartz, who founded CALMEC Global Law Group.

• Go Global: New Business Opportunities (TBSM 32) will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the CLC Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills. This U.S. Department of Commerce workshop will offer tips on how to find markets, finance transactions, locate partners and identify opportunities with the U.S. government.

• Basic Record Keeping for Small Business (TBSM 6) will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and 23. The class will be taught by Leonard Dam, principal of Dam Snell and Taveirne, Ltd.

These programs are partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and CLC as a service to small businesses.

In addition, a free workshop on IRS e-Interaction will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24 in room C003 at the CLC Grayslake campus. Attend this workshop and learn how to file business taxes error free and on time.

This workshop is offered by the Internal Revenue Service in partnership with the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County.

CLC Foundation Gala: Each year, the College of Lake County Foundation awards about $500,000 in scholarships to students at the college, and an important fundraiser to support this effort is the annual Scholarship Gala, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago.

Charles R. "Chuck" and Teresa Hall Bartels will be recognized at the gala as the event's honorary chairs. The Bartels have been active in fundraising and community service projects in Lake County for nearly 30 years.

The gala theme is "Out of This World." The evening will begin with a reception and silent auction at 6:30 p.m., followed by a gourmet dinner featuring food from around the world, a live auction and entertainment by The Orchestra 33. Raffle tickets are now on sale for $25 each or five for $100. The grand prize for the annual raffle is a 50/50 cash raffle, with only 1,000 tickets being sold.

Auction items include get-away travel packages, luxury furs and jewelry, specialty gift baskets donated by CLC employees, and celebrity doodles from figures like Anthony Hopkins, Dr. Phil and Kiefer Sutherland.

Youth Leadership Summit: A new educational incentive program, the Platinum Package, will start Saturday at the College of Lake County with the Youth Leadership Summit. The Youth Summit will host approximately 350 young people from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at CLC's Grayslake campus. The college will offer bus transportation to and from the event, with pick ups at 9:30 a.m. from Waukegan Upper Grade Center, 2325 W. Brookside Ave.; Waukegan Ninth Grade Center, 1011 Washington St.; North Chicago High School, 1717 Seventeenth Street; and a location in Zion to be announced. Students will be returned to the same locations at 5:30 p.m.

The summit will include a keynote motivational presentation by Al Duncan, a columnist for "The Black Collegian" magazine. He is co-author of a new book called "Unleash the Greatness Within You" and is the author of "Operation Self-Motivation: From Potential to Performance."

The summit will also include a workshop by 19th circuit Court Judge George Bridges on "Your Past is Not Your Potential," sorority and fraternity step shows, lunch and prize raffles. There is no charge to attend.

The Platinum Package, a program aimed at students in Waukegan, North Chicago and Zion, is a year-long youth leadership program that brings together the resources of CLC and communities in northeastern Lake County to address key issues that are hindering students from entering college and achieving their dreams. It is aimed at first-generation pre-college students in eighth through 12th grade.

Throughout the school year, the Platinum Package program will provide services including College Exam Prep sessions, APT on-site testing, study and life skill workshops, after school tutoring, leadership workshops, financial aid workshops and scholarship writing sessions, parent workshops, free college visit tour, P-16 dual college enrollment, CLC preview days, new student orientation and Youth Summit participation.

Maya Culture: The archaeological aspects of Maya culture will be covered in a presentation from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005) on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

Mary Renée Pirrello, a CLC graduate, and Julianna King, both students at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, will discuss their archeological experiences in Belize last summer. Lifesource Blood Drive: The College of Lake County Health Center and LifeSource invite blood donors to Grayslake for a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in Brandel Court, located in Building B on the Grayslake Campus. LifeSource supplies blood to 95 percent of hospitals in the Chicago area, and there is a constant demand for blood.

Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and not have donated blood within 56 days. Donors will receive a mini-physical that includes a blood pressure check and iron-level count. The blood drive will be conducted on a walk-in basis. Donors should also bring a photo ID. Fall art sale at ARTcetera: The ARTcetera Sales and Rental Gallery at the College of Lake County will hold a Fall Art Sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 17 and 18, featuring one-of-a-kind gifts made by Lake County artists. Buyers can save 10 percent at the sale, which includes hand-made jewelry, scarves, ceramics, sculpture, framed and unframed original prints, hand-made cards and photographs.

Members of the Friends of the Gallery are eligible to receive 20 percent off purchases on the sale day. In addition to saving 20 percent at seasonal sales, Gallery members receive 10 percent off every day plus an additional 10 percent off during opening receptions at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art at CLC. The annual cost of membership is $30, payable to the College of Lake County Foundation.

Blood pressure screenings: The community is invited to the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus in Waukegan for a free blood pressure screening. Students from the CLC Medical Assisting program will conduct the health screening from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Oct. 17 and 24 as a community service. Registration is not required. The screening will be conducted in the Medical Assisting Lab, room S305, at the CLC Lakeshore Campus, 33 N. Genesee St., Waukegan.

Family violence symposium: A one-day family violence symposium titled "Family Violence and Mental Health: A Collaborative Community Response" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Oct. 18 in the C 005 Auditorium, lower level of Building C at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, chaired by the Honorable Christopher Starck.

The conference is designed for mental health professionals, health care professionals, teachers, social workers, clergy, members of the faith community, attorneys, law enforcement and anyone who works with families in crisis and wants to effect change in Lake County.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Carole Warsaw, director of the Domestic Violence and Mental Health Policy Initiative in Chicago. She chaired the committee that wrote the American Medical Association guidelines on domestic violence and co-authored the Family Violence Prevention Fund manual "Improving the Healthcare Response to Domestic Violence" and the AMA guidelines on the Mental Health Effects of Family Violence."

In addition to two keynote addresses by Dr. Warsaw, the symposium will include breakout sessions about suicide prevention in schools, military families, domestic violence perpetrator assessments, intimate partner violence, parents with dual diagnosis and mental health awareness in the faith community.

The cost to attend the symposium is $20, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. Continuing professional development credits are available. For more information, call (847) 543-2615. College expo: The Illinois College Exposition, hosted by the College of Lake County from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18, is a place for families to begin the college search process. The expo will be in the Physical Education Center, Building 7, on the CLC Grayslake campus. Parking is available in lots 2 or 3, on the north side of the CLC campus, closest to the Washington Street and Lancer Lane entrance.

Two sessions on financial aid will be in room 706 of the Physical Education Center. The 6:45 p.m. session will be given in English, and the 7:15 p.m. session will be conducted in Spanish.

The event is being sponsored by the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling and is intended for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. Representatives from colleges and universities in Illinois and across the United States will provide information about admission to their institutions. The armed forces also will be represented.

Two film series: The College of Lake County will present a series of recent international films and a series of independent films. There is no charge for the films, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Fridays in room A162 (unless noted otherwise) on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

• "Shutter" (2004) will be shown on Oct. 19 in the C Wing Auditorium (C005). "Shutter" falls within the tradition of recent Asian horror films while presenting an original spin on the imagery and themes of movies such as "Ringu" and "A Tale of Two Sisters."

• "Après Vous" (2003), screened on Nov. 2, is a comedy about death, love and French food. A Parisian waiter stops a man from committing suicide and then takes him under his wing, but matters become complicated when he attempts to repair his new friend's broken romance. This film is co-sponsored by the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division as part of French Week at CLC. Upcoming films in the CLC Independent Film Series include:

• "Riding Solo on Top of the World" will be presented on Nov. 16. Director Gaurav Jani covers thousands of miles on his motorcycle, from his home in Mumbai through the Changthang Plateau, one of the most remote places in the world. Along the way, he films his journey through the beautiful landscapes and the people he meets along the way, including the Buddhist Chang pas.

• "King Corn" will be shown on Dec. 7. The film concerns two recent college graduates who travel to their ancestral home in rural Iowa, plant a single acre of America's most powerful crop, corn, and attempt to follow its fate as food. In their year-long adventure they see the realities of modern farming first-hand, explore a fast-food nation built on corn syrup sodas and corn-fed meat and come to question government subsidies, intensive agriculture and cheap food.

Discovery! Magic lectures: Explore the history of magic in two programs on Oct. 19 that delve into illusion and magic from the 1800s to today, presented by the College of Lake County Discovery! program, designed for adults 50 and over.

From 10 a.m. to noon, "Abracadabra: Conjurors and Illusionists from Isaac Fawles to Houdini" will look at the most famous, infamous, inventive and controversial magicians from the early 1800s to Houdini in the 20th century. Course fee: $15.

From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. "Movie Magic: Magic and Magicians on the Big Screen" will explore two recent movies, "The Illusionist" and "The Prestige," and their place within the history of magic and magicians. Course fee: $25, including a boxed lunch. Enroll in one or both lectures.

Learn about green roofs: A green roof seminar designed for building managers, architects, landscape architects, environmental program staff, teachers and public planners will be offered by the College of Lake County from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 19 featuring green roof expert David Yocca. The course fee is $25.

This seminar and tour, which will begin and end at CLC's Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills, will provide an introduction to green roof technology, describe benefits and ecological services, including storm water retention and energy reduction and provide resources for component and plant material research.

After the presentation, participants will see Southlake's newly planted green roof areas at the Southlake Educational Center, then board a bus to the Skokie Public Library to view a mature green roof system of the same type. Bus transportation will return participants to the CLC Southlake Educational Center.

Ceramics lecture: A guest lecturer will discuss ceramics and East Asia from 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20.

Meghen Jones is a writer, curator and doctoral student in art history at Boston University, where she is pursuing a dissertation on Tomimoto Kenkichi, regarded by many as the most significant figure in the history of modern Japanese ceramics. Jones will discuss how ceramics became "modern art" in Japan and how they relate to the art ceramics of Kenkichi.

Irish vocalist Mary Black: The award-winning Irish vocalist Mary Black, owner of seven platinum albums, will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Mainstage Theatre at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County.
