Club's dinner, auction to benefit community needs

Perhaps you dream of being a village official for a day.

Need a weekend getaway? Who doesn't!

Believe it or not, one upcoming event fills the bill on all accounts.

The Glendale Heights Junior Woman's Club's 24th annual Fall Extravaganza will be Oct. 26 at Glendale Lakes Golf Club, 1550 President St., Glendale Heights.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and a live auction at 7:30 p.m.

Guests start the evening surveying the live auction items and shopping for holiday crafts made by a club member and her husband.

"They spend the whole year making things," said Becki Tybor, who is organizing the event. "All their work is beautiful. They do a really outstanding job."

There also will be a silent auction and raffles, too.

Live auction items may include prizes such as custom furniture, exercise equipment, trips and what Tybor calls the best part of the night -- a chance to bid on being Glendale Heights' fire chief, police chief or mayor for a day.

The two chiefs, in particular, "really go overboard" with good-natured teasing during the bidding, Tybor said with a laugh.

"It's always so comical," she said.

Proceeds from the annual event are used to help local residents in need. This year, funds raised will help Timothy "T.J." Skipper, a 2-year-old boy diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare childhood cancer that affected his eye and required it to be removed. Money also will be donated to the Homeless Sandwich Project, a program run by club member Virginia Proffitt and her husband, James. For the past 17 years, the couple has been making hundreds of sack lunches every Sunday that they delivery to homeless veterans on the streets of Chicago.
