Red Devils power to state
Quality at both the top and bottom of the lineup helped Hinsdale Central's girls golf team earn a spot in the Class 2A state meet.
Senior Alexandra Lederhausen, the defending individual state champ, shot 72 on Monday to win the Homewood-Flossmoor sectional, held at the 5,583-yard, par-71 Coyote Run Golf Course.
Marian Catholic won the team title by firing 310, and Hinsdale Central tied with Homewood-Flossmoor at 317. The Red Devils' fifth score, an 87 from senior Christie Scott, broke the tie and sent Hinsdale Central into this weekend's Class 2A state meet at Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center in Carbondale.
The other counting scores for Hinsdale Central came from sophomore Samantha Postillion (78), senior Katie Kuhn (83) and junior Lizzie Zimmer (83).
Neuqua Valley junior Hannah Buck had the third-best individual qualifying score (78) and will compete in her third straight state finals event this weekend. She placed seventh individually last season. The Wildcats shot 356 as a team and placed sixth.
Naperville North advanced a pair of players to the state meet: Senior Amanda Bruski (76) and junior Marissa Miko (80).
Waubonsie Valley had no individual qualifiers but placed fifth as a team at 341.
• At the Rockford Guilford Class 2A girls golf sectional and with all but the last group in, Barrington's last blank, McCall Barsamian, needed to shoot 89 to tie the Fillies with leader Stevenson (336).
"I don't like that kind of excitement," joked Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck. "A little too much excitement. She wasn't too happy with (her score of 44) at the turn. The back plays a couple strokes easier so I had my fingers crossed."
When Barsamian's back came in at 84, the Fillies had won easily.
With a 331, Barrington won the sectional and advanced to state as a team for the third time over the last four seasons. Amanda Schmitz shot 79 to lead the Fillies.
Stevenson also advanced to the state meet.
