Grayslake Park District notes
Asset allocation: Asset allocation is the process of spreading money across stocks, bonds and cash equivalents to reflect goals and risk tolerance. This program will address investment horizon and overall financial profile. This class is open to adults age 18 and older will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Seidenberg Investment Group, 229 Center St., Grayslake. Cost is $8 for residents and $10 for nonresidents.
Adult, infant and child CPR: This class is for anyone age 16 and up who would like to learn techniques or refresh their memory on how to save lives through cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Classes will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Nov. 14. Class will meet at the Grayslake Fire Station, 160 Hawley St.
Learn how to perform rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and perform one-rescuer CPR. All participants are eligible for an American Heart Association certification that is valid for two years.
Participants must pick up a book at the park district office prior to class. Cost is $32 for residents and $42 for nonresidents.
Basketball camp: North Shore Basketball Camp offers boys and girls ages 7 to 14 basketball play and instruction, from 3 to 5 p.m. Sundays Sunday to Nov. 4 in the park district recreation center gym.
Participants are grouped by age and skill level and receive instruction geared to their abilities. Participants will work on shooting, passing, rebounding, dribbling, free throws, lay-ups, defense and conditioning all while learning the importance of sportsmanship, discipline and team play.
Each participant will receive a T-shirt, squeeze bottle and a certificate of completion at the end of the session. Cost is $99 for residents and $124 for nonresidents.
Board Vacancies: The Grayslake Community Park District is currently accepting applications for two board member vacancies. The term of the appointment would be until the next Park District Commissioner election in April 2009. Interested candidates must live within the Grayslake Park District boundaries and be a legal voter. Residents interested in serving as a park district commissioner should submit a letter of interest stating qualifications and why they want to serve the community. All letters should be directed to Ken Ryan, President, Board of Commissioners by Oct. 15. Applications can be dropped off or mailed to the Grayslake Park District Recreation Center, 240 Commerce Drive, Grayslake, Illinois 60030. Baby Album Workshop: Rebecca Quackenbush will explain how to get organized and started with baby album goals from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 18 in the GLPD Rec Center Multipurpose Room. Cost is $10 for residents and $13 for nonresidents.
Halloween Hoopla: This Non-Scary Halloween Celebration is designed for children ages 1 to 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 (rain date: Oct. 19) at the Central Park Walkway, near the Aquatic Center. The event will include Trick-or-Treat Walking Path, hay rides, kids storytelling at the pavilion, free balloons and refreshments. Advance registration is $6 per child; cost at the door is $7 (parents and children 12 months and under free). Parking will be available at the Aquatic Center and Middle School.
Golf tournament: This tournament is designed to play the golf course in a rather random fashion, making shot selection a real challenge, putting many more hazards in play and befuddling the mind. This is event is for all levels of golfers ages 16 and older. The event also will feature some unusual golf course contests as seen on the Golf Channel's Big Break series. The tournament will start at 9 a.m. Oct. 20 at the Grayslake Park District Golf Course (Carillon North). Cost is $15 per person.
Swing Dance: Experience the dance, music and history of swing. The basics of leading and following will be stressed to help dancers feel comfortable dancing and hearing the music. Class will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 20 to Nov. 10 in the GLPD Dance Studio. Cost is $85 per resident couple, $106 per nonresident couple.
Halloween Scavenger Hunt: Join a scavenger hunt in three park district parks from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23. There will be clues to follow to find all sorts of prizes. Transportation to the park sites will be by park district van. This program will be fully chaperoned. Bring a flashlight. This program, for children 8- to 10-years-old. Drop off and pick up will be at the Rec Center. Cost is $22 for residents and $28 for nonresidents.
Mom/Daughter Jazzercise: Junior Jazzercise teaches things like coordination, strength and endurance, nutrition, and the importance of physical fitness. Kids ages 6 to 12 dance their way through specially choreographed age-appropriate routines to popular music. Class takes place from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 23 to Nov. 27 in the Woodview School Gym. Cost is $48 per resident mother and daughter ($24 per additional child) and $60 for nonresident mothers and daughters ($30 per additional child).
Halloween Ghost Walk: The Annual Grayslake Ghost Walk, from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Central Park Woods, is recommended for ages 11 years and up, or with parental discretion. This event will include a Scary Walk-through Trail, bonfire and refreshments. Parking will be available at the middle school and Aquatic Center. Cost is $4 per person, payable at door.
