Events ask individuals to stand up for veterans

The third annual Stand Down For Veterans in Algonquin hopes to help a record number of people who face major challenges -- veterans who are newly discharged, displaced, disabled, homeless or unemployed.

Slated for Monday and Tuesday at YMCA Camp Algonquin, 1889 Cary Road, event organizers expect to provide services for more than 100 veterans.

"Stand Down has really grown over the past two years," said John Blanchard, executive director of the National Association of Systems Administrators Education Corporation, the sponsor of the event. "Just 30 individuals showed up the first year. Last year, we had about 40.

"The huge increase is because of tremendous support and promotion by veteran service organizations and agencies," Blanchard added.

Services include free medical screenings, employment services, referrals for housing assistance, dental services and eye care, legal counseling, and the opportunity to register for medical care.

Veterans also can receive free haircuts and massages.

Hot meals and the use of shower facilities are available both days, and overnight shelter will be provided Monday.

It's a hand up -- not a handout, Blanchard insists.

"The veterans aren't looking for charity, and the help we're giving them should not be interpreted as charity," he said. "They want a job, a place to live, a means of paying their bills. The same things all of us want and need. They deserve these things."

The event's Columbus Day slating has allowed a number of legislators to attend, due to the government holiday.

U.S. Reps. Melissa Bean and Donald Manzullo, state Sen. Pam Althoff and state Rep. Michael Tryon plan to attend.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Illinois Director of Veteran Affairs Tammy Duckworth have arranged video presentations.

Transportation will be provided to the veterans from various pickup points throughout the area, including local PADS shelters and Metra stations.

Individuals and organizations from the community have donated clothing and shoes, new underwear and socks, and toiletries.

Donations still are needed, said Kathy Chwedyk, development director of the sponsoring organization.

"We'll take anything -- baked goods, toiletries, fast-food gift certificates … new underwear is always wanted," she said.

Volunteers also are needed for the event, especially on Monday.

"We'd love to have more people to work as parking attendants, to help serve meals and clean up," Chwedyk said.
