Briefs: Skating contest on Sunday
On Sunday, the LoLo Skate Company and the village of Antioch will host a skateboarding competition. The skate park is at Williams Park in Antioch behind the public library on Williams Street. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the competition kicks off at 1 p.m. All levels of skateboarding skill are invited, but skaters must wear helmets and follow park rules. A $10 registration fee is required in cash, with the money going to charity. Participants younger than 18 must have a parent's signature on the registration form. Trophies and prizes will be awarded and there will be live music throughout.
Lambs Farm begins harvest
The Haunted Harvest will kick off from 6 to 10 p.m. tonight at Lambs Farm on Route 176 east of the Tri-State Tollway near Libertyville. This spooky celebration open to all ages will continue Saturdays through October. Among activities are a train of terror, creature walk, graveyard golf, enchanted carousel and monster midway. An all-night pass costs $15. Children age 3 and under enter free with an adult pass. Individual activity pricing is available.
Rotary holds dinner tonight
The Antioch Rotary Club will host its 32nd Annual Pork Chop Barbecue and Auction beginning with dinner at 5 p.m. today at Father Hanley Social Center in St. Peter School, 900 St. Peter St., Antioch. The dinner will be followed by a live and silent auction from 7 to 10 p.m. Proceeds benefit students and exchange programs in the northern Lake County region. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 at the First National Bank, State Bank of the Lakes, Osmond Insurance, Town Community Bank & Trust, Piggly Wiggly and Travel by Design in Antioch. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $25.
Grant's homecoming
It's the beginning of homecoming for Grant High School in Fox Lake. Festivities start off today at 9 a.m. with a parade, which will head from the high school, at the corner of Route 59 and Grand Avenue, and go north on Devlin Road. It will turn west along Grand Avenue and follow that course until ending at Fox Lake Towne Center at the corner of Rollins and Grand. The homecoming football games will take place at the school athletic fields after the parade. The varsity football team will take on the Round Lake Panthers at 1 p.m. The sophomores will play at 10:30 a.m. The dance will be held in the gymnasium from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Ranney inducted
Grayslake resident George Ranney, president and chief executive officer of Chicago Metropolis 2020, will be inducted today into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. The academy elects inductees each year to celebrate superior scholarship, artistic triumphs and exemplary service to society. Among the 202 new Fellows this year are former Vice President Al Gore, former Supreme Court Associate Judge Sandra Day O'Connor and New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg. Metropolis 2020 is an influential coalition of business and civic leaders who deal with major regional issues including sprawl, affordable housing and transportation.
