Digest: House fire in Streamwood

Streamwood firefighters are investigating the origin of a blaze that caused an estimated $20,000 in structural damage and destroyed $10,000 of personal property at a home at 6 W. Green Meadows Blvd. Tuesday afternoon. No one was home at the time of the fire, which was found to be contained to a lower-level utility room. Smoke damage was spread throughout the house. Neighbors called 911 at 2:45 p.m. after hearing smoke detectors ringing in the house and smelling smoke outside. When firefighters arrived two minutes later, they saw light smoke coming from the chimney.

Cuba fall fest Saturday

Cuba Township is hosting its seventh annual Fall Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Grove, 28160 W. Cuba Road, Barrington. The event will feature food, games and live music. A petting zoo, hayrides and pumpkin painting are also scheduled, and voter registration will be available. Donations of non-perishable food items to the Cuba Township food pantry, as well as check or cash donations to the Cuba Cares Fund, will be collected. Octoberfest at Twin Lakes

Harper's DeaFest on now

The 15th annual Chicago DeaFest is going on today through Sunday at Harper College in Palatine. The event draws people from across the Midwest with films, an academic bowl, expo and other events geared toward people with hearing impairments. For more information, go to deafest.harperevents.com.

New bank approved:

A freestanding Bank of America at Algonquin and Golf roads was unanimously approved by the Arlington Heights village board. The 4,598-square-foot bank will open in the Surrey Ridge Shopping Center, currently anchored by a Lowe's Home Improvement Center. A vacant restaurant building, which used to house Timber Lodge, will be demolished to make room for the bank, which will also include three drive-through lanes.
