Apple Fest good to the last bite

It's a hello to fall and a goodbye to festival season in Long Grove.

The town's annual Apple Fest will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the historic downtown.

It's the last of the three big festivals -- Chocolate, Strawberry and Apple -- that take place between May and October.

Apple-themed food and products galore will line the village streets. This year there will also be a small orchard.

"They're wooden apple trees as part of the Apple Jam Kids' Expo," said Kelley Happ, communications coordinator for the Long Grove Business and Community Partners. "We have little prizes on all the apples, fun things for the kids."

The scarecrow contest from last year is continuing in front of the shops in the downtown. Festival visitors can vote on various scarecrows that owners have dressed.

Free entertainment will also be on hand at the Fountain Square and Covered Bridge stages with folk, bluegrass, country, rock and jazz music.

Shops will, of course, have their share of apple goodies, such as caramel apples, apple pies and apple martinis.

There will also be hayrides and carriage rides.

"It's just a wonderful way to celebrate the fall and the last of the nice autumn weather," Happ said.
