Addison's Fall Festival to include parade this year
While tradition is important to Addison residents and officials, they're also willing to try new things.
That's why the village will host its first Founder's Day Parade Sunday in conjunction with its annual Fall Festival.
In past years the village held its annual parade during Community Days in August, while its fall fest typically happens closer to Halloween.
But officials and volunteers say the new arrangement is the best way to bring everyone together.
"We like the parade, which has been a tradition for many years," said Mayor Larry Hartwig. "But we've had problems in the past with the heat in August and with getting in touch with school bands during the summer."
So this year, the parade will feature the Medinah Shriners, community clubs and, of course, student groups who are back in action for the academic year.
Lake Street traffic will be closed from Lombard Road to Addison Road beginning at 12:30 p.m. until the parade's conclusion.
Following the parade, the Fall Festival at Friendship Plaza will feature food, entertainment, rides for children, a hay ride through the historical district, an animal exhibit by Cosley Zoo and more.
Although the fest traditionally features a costume contest, officials say that will not happen this year because Sunday is too far in advance of Halloween.
During the festival, the Addison Historical Museum, Coach House and Century House will be open. St. Paul Lutheran Church will also host activities.
Village Clerk Lucille Zucchero said it only makes sense for Addison's historical sites to be a main feature on Sunday.
"If it's Founder's Day, those places tell you where your roots really started," she said.
Kennedy Drive will close at 12:30 p.m. for the parade and remain closed until 6:30 p.m. Parking for the Fall Festival is available at Green Meadow Shopping Center, Kennedy Drive and Lake Street, and at Indian Trail Junior High School. To park at Indian Trail, enter at Lincoln Avenue and Army Trail Road.
