Abortion foes to form Life Chain

The opening of a Planned Parenthood clinic this week in Aurora likely will spur even more interest in this year's annual Life Chain event, organizers say.

Abortion opponents this weekend plan to show their reverence for life by participating in the nationwide event, which will take place in various spots locally.

Hundreds of residents will gather in DuPage County from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, holding signs that read "Abortion Kills Children" and "Adoption -- the Loving Option."

Most activity will take place along Ogden Avenue, such as at Ogden and Main Street in Lisle, and Ogden and Washington Street in Naperville.

"It's a very peaceful opportunity to witness support for life," said Mary Bliss, an Illinois Citizens for Life supporter and participant.

The one-hour event appeals to all ages, she said, and it's a good way for first-timers to get involved.

In Aurora, abortion opponents will gather at Galena Boulevard and Elmwood Drive on the city's west side, with a second group at the Planned Parenthood clinic at Oakhurst Drive and New York Street.

There's definitely renewed interest with the Aurora clinic, which offers abortion services, bringing national attention to the issue, said Eric Scheidler, spokesman for Chicago's Pro-Life League.

Some of his group's rallies and protests have attracted more than 1,000 participants, he said.

"I'm certain many people involved in the prayer vigil will really seize the opportunity to do the Life Chain," he said.

Religious groups and other organizations that oppose abortion also will take part.

"It gives you a very good feeling to think that you have done something to (honor) your beliefs," Bliss said.
