Wheaton man faces drug, weapons charges
A Wheaton man has been charged with several drug and gun violations following a traffic stop in Lisle.
Todd W. Samuel, 23, of 1586 Coloma Court, was arrested Sept. 27 after officers spotted him failing to stop at a stop sign along Four Lakes Avenue near an apartment complex, Lisle police said today.
After the stop, field sobriety tests were administered and Samuel was subsequently placed under arrest on suspicion of DUI, police said. The officer gave a cursory search of Samuel's car and discovered marijuana as well as what appeared to be a secret compartment in the center console.
A search warrant was issued for the vehicle to allow police to look into the locked compartment. Police said they found a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a small bag of marijuana.
According to the DuPage County circuit court clerk's Web site, Samuel is facing six charges stemming from the arrest. He is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful installation of a false compartment in a motor vehicle, DUI, possession of cannabis, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to yield at a stop sign.
Prosecutors also upgraded previous misdemeanor weapons charges stemming from a 2006 arrest in Glen Ellyn to felonies and added them to this case, court records indicate. He is facing two weapons charges from that arrest. The report indicates the weapon was either a knife or a club in that instance.
Samuel was released from the DuPage County jail in Wheaton on Friday after posting $15,000 bond, jail officials said.
His next court date is slated for Oct. 23.
