Briefs: Guilty in theft

A Fox Lake man faces up to eight years in prison after admitting he stole a computer while on probation in a drug case. Sam Hayden, 21, of 32 E. Grand Ave., Apt. 3, pleaded guilty to felony theft Tuesday during a hearing before Circuit Judge John Phillips. Assistant State's Attorney Steven Derue said Hayden entered the Wal-Mart on Route 173 in Antioch on Feb. 6 and obtained a sticker used for returned merchandise. He placed the sticker on a $500 computer and walked out of the store with it. When confronted by store employees, Hayden tried to explain he had changed his mind about returning the computer, but the employees called police. At the time of his arrest, Hayden was serving two years' probation for a 2006 drug arrest. Hayden will return to face Phillips for sentencing Nov. 20.

State upholds Grayslake

Grayslake officials announced Tuesday the Illinois Liquor Control Commission granted a motion to dismiss an appeal filed by a store owner who lost his license to sell alcohol. Mayor Timothy Perry revoked the license of Extra Value Food & Liquor in July, saying he determined the store willingly sold alcohol and cigarettes to minors. Perry heard six hours of testimony in the case in his role as village liquor commissioner. In part, testimony showed Extra Value sold alcohol to underage customers on seven dates from February to June. Criminal charges also have been lodged against Extra Value owner John Kielar. Extra Value no longer is operating at 10 N. Lake St. "Retailers who have been given the privilege of selling liquor in Grayslake are expected to make sure our youth are not able to gain unlawful access to liquor and tobacco," Perry said. "Vendors found to have violated the law will be held accountable."
