Willowbrook 42, Addison Trail 20

Willowbrook football coach Mark Olson spent Friday night sleeping in a tent pitched on the 50-yard line of the Warriors' home field, holding up his end of the bargain after his players held up theirs.

Olson promised his team he'd camp out at midfield Friday night if the Warriors ended the three-year grip Addison Trail held on the District 88 trophy, and they obliged with a 42-20 win in Villa Park.

"I hope someone comes out here and starts a fire for me," Olson joked, as he stood ready to pitch his tent. "I'm just glad it's not raining."

A pitch to Brandon Martinez, a quick slant pattern run by Milton Colbert, a Joe Flood interception, and a fumble recovery by Ryan Mazgay -- all were big plays that led to Willowbrook touchdowns in the West Suburban Gold showdown.

The Warriors also had a pair of long offensive drives that set up scores, but they buried the Blazers under a barrage of big plays.

After starting the season with three wins before losing their last two games, Willowbrook (4-2, 2-2) needed to get back in the win column against Addison Trail (1-5, 1-2).

"Everyone does the math, and knows when they're edging towards that fifth win to give themselves a chance," Olson said. "They've also had the better of us the last three years, so this is big for our kids."

"I've never even seen (the District 88 trophy) before," Mazgay said. "I saw it on the sideline during the game, and it's all I wanted tonight."

Willowbrook capped a 65-yard opening drive with a Wayne Bolden touchdown run from 10 yards out. Martinez took a pitch from Kevin Pohl and streaked 45 yards up the right side to give his squad a 14-0 lead.

The Blazers scored on a 16-yard pass play to Vince Beachem, before Pohl hit Colbert on a quick slant pattern that the junior extended to a 61-yard touchdown.

Beachem caught a 68-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but Bolden scored again from 2 yards out before Flood's interception and long return set up a Jason Tadlock touchdown run.

Mazgay recovered a Blazers' fumble in the fourth quarter and scampered 95 yards for a touchdown, before Blazers back Mike D'Ambrose capped a 117-yard rushing performance with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Parpet applauded the hard day's running put in by D'Ambrose, along with an undersized line that battled hard.

"Our kids competed," Parpet said. "I thought Zac (Maxwell) threw the ball well, and our offensive line did a good job."
