Briefs: Veterans fair Monday

Tammy Duckworth, director of the state's department of veterans affairs, and U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean on Monday will be in Hoffman Estates hosting an open house on veterans services. State Rep. Fred Crespo, Hoffman Estates Mayor William McLeod and Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson also are slated to appear at 10 a.m. Monday at the Schaumburg Township Building. Several federal, state and local groups will showcase what its members offer veterans in terms of job and education opportunities, as well as legal and health programs.

Suicide prevention walk

About 1,000 people are expected to walk in Busse Woods at 11 a.m. today to raise funds to prevent suicide, which occurs every 16 minutes in the United States. Out of the Darkness Community Walks nationwide benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. More information is at www.outofthedarkness.org.

Police search for robber

Schaumburg police are looking for a man who robbed another man at knife-point Friday. Police said the victim was standing outside his apartment building on the 1200 block of Pine Valley shortly after midnight when he was approached by another man. The victim told police the man showed him a switchblade knife and demanded money. The victim took out his wallet and gave the robber $80 in cash. No one was injured during the robbery. Homecoming parade today

Barrington High School's homecoming parade will step off at 10:15 a.m. today at the Barrington Metra station, working its way from there through the downtown area and ending at the high school. A new addition to homecoming festivities this year is an outdoor cookout hosted by the Barrington Alumni Association that will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at RSVP's 2, 28686 Northwest Hwy. Admission is free. The homecoming football game against Hoffman Estates kicks off at 2 p.m.

Health, safety fair today

Central DuPage Hospital Convenient Care, 820 Stearns Road, Bartlett, will host a health and safety fair from 1 to 4 p.m. today. Child safety seat installation will be checked from 1 to 3 p.m., and a limited number of booster seats will be given away. Other health-related booths and activities will be on site, and children in attendance will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag, while supplies last.

Firehouse open house

The Schaumburg Fire Department will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. today at Fire Station 51, 950 W. Schaumburg Road. Members of the community are encouraged to stop by for demonstrations of various fire department equipment, including helicopters, rope rescues, vehicle extrication tools and tall ladder platforms. Also on hand will be the police department's canine unit, SWAT equipment and more. Fire Station 51 was previously known as Fire Station 1 but had its number changed when the department joined Northwest Central Dispatch. For more information on the event, call (847) 885-6300.

District 214 honors alumni

Northwest Suburban High School District 214 is honoring 10 alumni during this year's homecoming festivities. Full details on those honored, who include the Blackhawks team physician and the first tenured female math professor at Johns Hopkins University, will be in Tuesday's Neighbor section. Prospect and Elk Grove honored their alumni at homecoming Friday night. Prospect honored Daily Herald Fox Valley Editor Jim Baumann, Gail Linskey Rosseau, Maria McCarthy and Roger Ibbotson. Elk Grove honored Tracy (Dickson) Berger, Chikako Mese and Jennifer Tomaso. Wheeling will honor its alumni next Friday at homecoming. Hersey High School and Buffalo Grove High School will honor their 2007 alumni next spring. Rolling Meadows will honor its alumni this winter.
