McHenry County finds fourth West Nile case of year

A 38-year-old Marengo man has become the fourth McHenry County resident to test positive for the West Nile virus, the McHenry County Department of Health announced Thursday.

The man was diagnosed earlier this month with West Nile virus meningitis earlier this month and was hospitalized for a time while undergoing treatment. He since has returned home.

The county announced its first case of West Nile of the year late last month after a 34-year-old Lake in the Hills man contracted the potentially fatal virus. Last week, two more cases were confirmed.

The virus is spread through the bites of mosquitoes that contract it from infected birds. Most infected humans experience mild symptoms such as fevers, headaches and body aches.
