Longtime body shop owner remembered for his humor

Tom Hurley was a warm, funny, loving man who cared deeply about family and was always willing to help people in need.

Mr. Hurley, longtime co-owner of Tom's Body Shop in Ingleside, died Tuesday from a massive heart attack, family members said.

He was 60 years old.

A member of the National Athletic Club in Fox Lake and the Nippersink Hunt Club, he was a longtime Bears fan who was best known as a former coach and board member for the Grant Township Area Athletic Association baseball league, his wife, Kathleen, said.

"The kids he coached continued to call him Dad for years after he stopped coaching," she said. "He was always great with children, and always there for people."

She said Mr. Hurley's greatest love was fishing, where he often showed off his sense of humor to the people he went with.

"One time, I caught the biggest fish and wanted to take a picture of it," she said. "But, when I left to get the camera, he filleted it. It was really funny."

He is survived by his wife, his son, Thomas, and two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica Galek.

He also left behind six grandchildren: Madeline, Kristie, Kasey, Brina, Kirsten and Thomas.

Kathleen said Mr. Hurley's love of family was always strong.

"He would have given the shirt off his back for any one of his family members or friends," she said. "He was truly my best friend in the world."

Visitation for Mr. Hurley will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the K.K. Hamsher Funeral Home, 12 Pistakee Lake Road in Fox Lake.

Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. today.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials go to the Fox Lake Volunteer Fire Department. For more information, contact the funeral home at (847) 587-2100.
